    Draft selection query

    There have been 5 retirements.

Assuming we trade off Saddo and Powell, that leaves 7 spots.

Delistings? Fixter after 3 injury prone years.

That leaves 8 vacant spots on the list.

Chapman joins, Vogels upgraded - 6 vacant spots.

I can't see the Swans getting 6 new players throught the draft.

I'm guessing, they might promote more rookies. Wouldn't see anyone really available in the PSD with the Swans having last pick.

Possibly one or two from Campbell, Grundy or Shaw?

We should be able to keep one of Sunqvist and Fixter I suspect. Anyone who has seen the ressies have an opinion on who is 'better'?

Just noticed discussion of rookies on another thread.

I suppose what I was querying was the large number of vacant spots we have for next year.

A quick scan of the last 3 years showing number leaving at the end of the year were:

      2004 - 3
      2003 - 5 (1 rookie upgraded then delisted)
      2002 - 7 (Kelly, Dunkley, Lockett, Schwass)

We had significant retirements in 2002, yet made the prelim in 2003. They were all (nearly all) key players in first 22 whereas this year they are nearly all on the fringe of the GF except for Ball.

I think there is still opportunity to trade or draft wisely to keep the team very competitive next year even with the improvement of WB, Tigers and the possibility of trading one or two of the Gf team. Not including ROK.

After two (I think) year you HAVE to either promote rookies or delist them.

You also HAVE to free up a certain number of places on your list each year (4 or 5 I think). This was the reason Buchanan got delisted then picked up again a few years back.

These rules are to stop clubs just sitting on a pool of youngsters, to male sure they get an opportunity to be drafted by another club.

You must make three selections at the national draft. After the prmotion of a couple of rookies I can't see us taking anymore than 3 selections, with 4 only being used if they decide to cut either Fixter or Sunquist (which I think they won't).

With our 2nd pick going for Chambers, one would assume the football department are thinking they can off load Saddington & Powell for an earlier second and third rounder.

We then use the earlier second rounder to take Richardson at the last minute when SnDon are willing to deal for something in return.

            Richards, not Richardson.

God yes. Imagine Richo on our list! No room for both him and Baz in our forward line, and I'll keep Hall thanks.

Nicks' retirement doesn't really count because he was a veteran. All it does is free up an additional spot on the rookie list, but given our rookie list is already larger than most and generally the club hasn't filled it up, it becomes irrelevant.

What's wrong with the latter? I rekon I could make a damn good fullforward!
And you can't find nothing at all,
If there was nothing there all along.

So the 5 retirements free up 4 spots. One of these has already been taken by Chambers. That leaves us with the minimum 3 for the draft.

Seems certain we'll elevate Vogels, so we'd have to free up at least one more through trading or delisting.
