    interesting goss from inside melbourne

Had an interesting chat in my professional capacity today with a guy who works in the conditioning area for one of the big Melb clubs (would love to say more, but he'd kill me and that's fair enough)

He said he's heard stories re. the St. Kilda conditioning people really pushing their guys in the week before the Preliminary Final, to the point where they'd done things he described as "bloody stupid." His comment was that the consensus down there was that it had cost them the premiership, and the hierarchy at St. Kilda were furious (but surely they only have themselves to blame?)

Also said the people at their club saw the Swans as the "fourth best" team this year but the margin had purely been overcome by the good management of the players fitness, plus a bit of luck (which is what anyone needs to win a premiership)

Two things occur. Dave Misson and team - fantastic job.

Secondly, Craig Starcevich is moving from Brisbane to St. Kilda next year. This is going to be v. interesting to see if Starcevich can improve things for them

(and counteract that idiot of a coach they've got. Is anyone else out there glad he is not our coadh?)

No doubt about the credit due to our fitness staff and there is already plenty of posts on here saying exactly that.

Why do you think they spent so often in the surf during the finals??!!

I for one hope St Kilda's woes continue.

Actually some members of the Saints hierarchy interviewed recently have basically openly declared they thought they were the best team but lost due to injuries and they were spewing regarding the team's preparation for the preliminary final. Starcevich generally did quite well with the Lions but they've always had a lot of injuries to overcome, especially this year even if they have been at the forefront of sports medicine.

I hope that he stays their coach for a long time...cos he isn't going to get them a premiership. Talk about being on a self love fest...."let's see how I can be coach...I know sack Blighty and appoint myself" What a wanker.

Definately, He would have been sacked by now if it wasn't for the great list he's got to cover his weaknesses. Imagine if Leigh Matthews was coaching them, they would have had 3 premierships allready. Even Frawley could have coached a list like that to a premiership by now. I hope that fat turd stays in charge for many years to come.

The problem was they believed their own hype.

In 2003 you could say we fell short due to a high injury toll but that's the way it goes.

Am reading 'Mao' - the real story of Mao Zedong. Grant Thomas aught to wear a Mao suit because these two characters have much in common. Same methods of authoratarianism, lies, purges, lust for power etc. Only difference is Mao was responsible for the deaths of 70 million people, while Grant Thomas has cost St Kilda a premiership .
He had observed that people who did lie were, on the whole, more resourceful and ambitious and successful than people who did not lie.

Interesting lachlan - if you remember the TV coverage before the PF the injured Saints were all doing these secret sprints sessions etc - seemed very strange at the time & now seems even stranger. One wonders if they'd been good enuff to make the GF (and lets be clear about this - they weren't), it wouldn't have been surprising to seem some of the other borderline players crash in the same manner as Maguire & others did in the PF. Hard to believe conditioning staff can get this so wrong in this day & age.

What did Roos tell Davis this year? Something along the lines of "Talent will only get you so far....."

I feel sorry for the their fans that their club believe that all they need is the most "talented side" because chances are they will continue to fall short.

great post - plus their crappy culture and record number of wooden spoons

basically st kilda need Linda lovelace in their side

If true, this tells everyone just why the Saints have a grand total of one premiership since their inception (still better than Freo FWIW). Its nothing to do with 'luck' or 'fate' boys, its called 'determination'! Just have a look at how many players we had injured come GF day. At least TWO (Barry and Bucky) should not have played, and Willo was there on guts alone. Its all about HEART lads, and thats just something the Saints lack badly IMO.
