    Swans: Colin Seery departs

The Chief Executive Officer of the Sydney Swans, Colin Seery today announced that he had advised the Board he would not be seeking an extension of his contract at the end of the season.

Since 1997, Colin has held a number of senior positions with the Club and was appointed Deputy Chief Executive Officer in 2001.

?At the end of the season, I will have been at the Swans for seven years and believe it?s time to pursue other career opportunities?, Colin said.

?I have made the announcement now to enable the Club to conduct the search for a new CEO who can be in place well in time to impact on plans for the 2004 season?.

?While the sporting revenue market in Sydney continues to be a challenge, I am extremely pleased with the projects initiated and the cost reductions that we have implemented throughout the Club and believe that the building blocks are in place for long term success?.

The Chairman of the Sydney Swans Richard Colless acknowledged Colin?s extended contribution in the building of the Club.

?Colin has been an important part of our off field team for seven years and we wish him well in his future career?, Mr Colless said.

Mr Colless said an executive search firm would be retained as soon as possible with the emphasis on engaging a CEO with a strong commercial and marketing background.

Well... that's 2 now. Cresswell and then Seery announcing their resignations well before the end of the year. Whether you were one of the ones screaming for change, or not... there's going to be plenty of new faces next year

177th Senior AFL Match - Round 4, 2009 - Sydney vs Carlton, SCG. This is obviously out of date. I suppose I'll update it once I could be bothered sitting down with the fixture and working it out....

It is very odd timing as he has been in the role for only a very short period. However, I do understand that 7 years is a long time in one place.

I wonder how he got on with the board. It would have been an extremely tough time to be in the job reporting a massive loss last year and with no real new sources of revenue this year. membership seems to have dropped again, and in this market is inevitable when success isn't apparant. You could throw miliions of dollars at marketing and still not convince the people of Sydney to buy a membership.

Cost cutting, while painful, is the only responsible way forward for the club in the short term. Hopefully this years batch of heroes on the field will deliver success off it

Maybe Andrew Ireland will assume the role. Remember he did hold it at the Lions.

Good luck Colin in whatever you decide to do.

At the Redbacks breakfast Andrew said that having held the CEO job at Brisbane, he didn't know why Colin would want it!

Well Ireland has to be the first pick of the board for the job.

Who knows - maybe he's being politely pushed? Maybe he has realised after trying it that the job is just not what he wants or is good at or some other reason.

Seery's appointment last September could very well have been pretty much an interim one anway.

New coach, new Director of Football, new Marketing Manager (I think) etc etc - it was fairly sensible to have someone who had been around the club for a while to oversee those major personnel changes.

They obviously feel things have settled down well and it is a reasonable time for Seery to move on.

I see it that way as well. He was probably stayed on as the stabilized influence during the transition period for the club. A wise decision in my book and it showed. So far despite all the changes in the club, there is no hiccup yet (apart from the loss of sponsorship which could be attributed to external factors).
