    Worst Trade Away

Given all the talk of who gets traded and who doesn't. I started to think about the worst trades the club has made.

A bad trade could be trading a youngster who turns into a gun at another club or inequity in the trade (players or draft picks) as examples.

Which player in the last 15 years, in your opinion, represents the the worst trade decision the club ever made and why?

I think over the years, on balance, Sydney has done pretty well in regards to trades.

Obviously in some cases players want out and you have to make sure you get something in return (Rocca & Grant trades for example).

Licuria is one who developed into a really good player after he left Sydney. In return we got pick 3 in the 98 draft and used it for Fosdike. One's now a premiership player, Licuria was a B&F at Collingwood.

Looking at some of the players we've brought in - Maxfield, Willo, Hall, Jolly, N.Davis to name a few - there would be far more clubs unhappy than happy with their trade outcomes with Sydney.

Some trades are barely 'trades' at all b/c the bargaining power is so weighted to one party (usually because the player has already indicated a firm intention to walk, and so the 'selling' club's only option is 'take what you're offered, or get nothing').

I don't know what we got for the Gaspar trade, but no doubt it was nowhere near enough. The same thing from the other end with Nick Davis to us.

        Worst trade ever!!!!

Well in the last 15 years anyhow.

The trade, whatever it was, to get Andrew Bomford back from SNDon.

Can't remember if these were trades or if we picked them up in drafts. But Michael Werner, Shannon Corcoran and Tony Begovich are 3 of the worst that we have picked up.

              Off the top of my head;

              Longmuire and Carey.

Whoever we got in exchange for the pick that netted the Coast Banfield.

Longmire, Carey, Rocca, Gasper and Licuria are the bad ones.

Davis, Hall, Lockett, Williams, Maxfield, Schuable are the good ones.

Most of our bad one were prior to the cap extension, most of our good ones since.

                Overall we're about even.

To be fair, that final we lost insipidly to Essendon at the MCG some years back - can't remember the year - he was one of the few who really seemed to try hard that day. I'm not sure who was traded for him, but I always give him some credit, as someone who at least battled on that one horrible day in Melbourne.

Unfortunately he's not even the best Ryan O the Swans have ever had!

What did we get for Rocca and Gasper? Neither wanted to stay, so can't blame the club for trading them.

We didn't. He was taken in the National Draft - a pick 50 something or thereabouts.

For Rocca we received Ben Wilson, Mark Orchard, and the picks we used to draft Brett O'Farrell (no 14) and Will Sangster.

Not many games there for the R&W, though Orchard was a handy player for a couple of seasons. I think it was O'Farrell who was used to trade for the no 4 pick used to draft Ryan Fitzgerald, though one could mount an argument that he netted us Fossie since suggestion was that had the club only had one of picks 3 and 4 in the 1998 draft they would have taken Fitzy, despite the order in which they picked the two.

For Gasper we effectively got Maxfield, though I don't think it was a straightforward trade. Only a small handful of R&W'ers would have any complaints there, methinks.

                          WORST TRADE EVER!

                          1997:

Brent Green and Simon Hawking from the Brisbane Bears for pick number 31 in the national draft.

Brent Green played 10 games for Sydney, Simon Hawking 4.

We traded Wayne Carey & Terry Daniher (even Anthony was good when we traded him). Not sure of dates but what player could be worth Wayne Carey (or have you all forgotten 96)
