One thing i won't forget that after the GF was the look of absolute joy on his face as he spoke to the players.

My suggested poll is 'What is the year of Sydney's drafting and recruiting history you remember most fondly?' And I'll put the case for 1992.

Among many, many super players that Sydney picked up through insightful drafting and clever trading in the late 80s and early 90s, my personal favourite draft/trade year was 1992.

I'll have to say up-front that it was ruined to some extent by the fact that we chanced across Daryn Creswell in the mid-season draft at #39. Once you read the below, you can see that the law of averages dictates that if you pick enough able-bodied young men, one of them must become a champion, I suppose. Picking Scott Direen at #95 in the national draft (only 52 games, but a useful player who was still worthy of the guernsey in 1996) was also a bit of a disappointment.

Apart from that, it's a litany of classic names and unforgettable moments. Let's relive the hits & memories:

What a list. What a bunch of guys. What a collection of 7 games. I don't mean they played 7 games on average. I mean: net total 7 games between them.

But wait! The genius doesn't end with picking unlisted talent! Have we got some trades for you!

Sydney had draft pick #1, and sensibly enough concluded that it would only waste it. So it traded it to the poor struggling WCE (1992 premiers, no less) who used it on the 251-game-and-counting Drew Banfield. We got Scott Watters (37 games) and Tony Begovich (5).

Still got draft pick #3? Get rid of it! Trade with Essendon, that's the plan. We'll take Ed Considine (28 games) and Michael Werner (20 games), both of whom only played in a team that was a chopping block. Essendon got Michael Prior, who was with Essendon for 81 games up until the year 2000, across one of their most successful periods.

Even pick #20 is too much. Why not trade with Essendon? They're always nice guys. We'll take Richard Ambrose (3 games) and let them pick Scott Cummings, who will play 40 games in red & black, and then 88 elsewhere.

To be fair, we also traded in Jayson Daniels (58 games) and Dean McRae (60) while giving away next-to-nothing. They both played almost every game in the salad days of 1993-5. They were both gone when we finally got good in early 1996.

And as the icing on the cake, we gave away Stuart Wigney (10 games with the Clones, 24 total) for pick 101, which unsurprisingly yielded zero-gamer Troy Hull; and for good measure, Dion Scott (73 games for the Bears/Blions) for pick 111, which-- you wouldn't guess it-- produced never-debuted Michael Gaffney.

That's 26 players-- you heard right, 26-- who joined the club in one 12 month period. 2 of whom I'd happily select in my team, and about 3 of whom would get selected if I had plenty of injuries and couldn't find anyone better. I have no idea what most of the balance even look like!

He was just about ready to become a gun. I remember the game before he broke his leg, it was in Adelaide and we happened to win which was rare. He played an absolute blinder.

Totally agree! He was a genuinely good person as well on and off the field. It truely is a shame that we will never know what his true potential may have been.
