    Read that article this morning.

Just goes to show even though we were banging on here about tanking it and drafting youngsters like alot of other teams, the club didn't follow the herd and went (and continues) to go about drafting differently.

The statistics on the kids and their chances of making 100 games are freightening when you see them presented that way.

I read the article and wondered afterwards how the other clubs would compare if their players were broken down into the different classifications. I wonder how different we actually are.
He reminds him of the guys, close-set, slow, and never rattled, who were play-makers on the team. (John Updike, seeing Josh Kennedy in a crystal ball)

Probably not alot different to most clubs, except maybe the Saints, Hawks, Dogs and now the Blues who have all spent extended time down the bottom and have invested heavily in youth over trading draft picks for particular players.

While I have been a big advocate over the last 4 years for the way we have traded and drafted, you still have to pick the right person and have the right structure in place to get the best out of them.

In those two facets we have done very well in the last 4 years or so.

But are they selling away the future, leaving a generation of fans to clutch to a lonely memory of 2005, or have they wisely broken from the herd?

The other thing worth mentioning is that Sydney (the city) has become a plus for some, particularly older, players. Hall and Lockett are the best known examples.

In the mid-90s, the "go home" factor was looking to be a bit of an ongoing issue for the Swans (e.g. Rocca, Grant), but the idea that Sydney is a place to "escape" the fishbowl scrutiny in the southern states is catching on.

This makes Sydney a more appealing club to be traded to for the players, giving the Swans a bit more flexibility than before.

Perhaps - only a theory - the Swans can see more likelihood of a player staying in the city if they've arrived when older. Therefore, trading over drafting has more of an edge than it otherwise might.

I'm with you on this one...but I think the Swans have been smart in recruiting given the stats

Read this article this morning too. Thought it made a lot of sense. Things may be different once this ridiculous priority pick rule ggoes next season (and not before time) but for the moment I'd say our plan seems like a winning one. Good to see we actually HAVE a plan too.

Let's face it, we're not like the US where their population is such that they have hundreds of players entering the drafts for their major sports. Our talent pool is just not that big. Not only that, but so many players are being siphoned off by other sports, particularly basketball, in the case of Australian Rules Football.
