Depending on which version of the height stats you believe, he's taller than Bolton, Leo (obviously) and even Andrew Dunkley.

When you read the profiles of these 2 blokes you can see why we picked them. They fit the types we like. That is, run all day find the footy, hard at it and what I like, good in traffic. The strength of our game right now is getting to the contest.

Laidlaw fits the bill also. Clearly we look at a certain type, namely someone who knows how to get the pill and is able to keep up the pressure.

      I'm happy with that.

I suspect it is the only thing he does with his life to accumulate that much info on so many people.

It's kinda scary - this bloke must know things about these guys that their families don't know. I presume he's an ex-recruiter or just a sad wannabe?

Anyway, interesting read, if a little eerie...

Except that all three are much more solid than Dempster. He's almost 22 - he won't develop much more physically than he already has.

Yep. Similar to Saddo in that regard. Hopefully he turns out to be a better footballer.

and in positions which they a) weren't drafted to the club for and b) use to playing on a solid regular basis.

To think that these two are the answer to our lack of height down back if we get hit by injuries (touch wood) is a major worry, but alas some people just are never willing to put their necks on the line and go against something the club does.
Umm, you might be catching Charlie's disease.

From memory, Vogels was a key position defender in country football (after playing a season as a winger, I think). He only played forward in the finals when he'd taken a hard knock.

I don't remember anything about Grundy's performance in the SANFL, but he was definitely listed as a key position defender in the 2004 Draft notes.

Given that Goodes is the first back-up for just about any position on the field, I'm quite comfortable with having two tall utilities like Vogels and Grundy as our defensive 'depth', especially as Richards has also played in defence for the Bombers.

I think he has showed that CHB isn't his bag though.

Played a full season for Norwood (SANFL league team), pretty much exclusively at full back (I suspect he played forward in junior grades-- however outstanding juniors are unlikely to be picked in defence.) The way he's oscillated between forward and back in reserves could be one of two things:
                    a) the club trying to give him a broad range of experience, and work out which one he's best suited for, or
                    b) recognition that it's pretty cold and boring in the Swans back half in the ACT comp.

PS God save us (and him) from Goodes ever having to hold down a defensive KP role again.

Sadly for the development of senior Swan defenders, this is all too true. James, LRT and Powell all played predominantly in the forward line in the reserves team, even though they were probably more likely options in defence at senior level.

Poor Guy Campbell spent much of his time last year consigned to the back half. One wonders if he might have impressed more had he played more in the forward half.

Agree that he doesn't seem to be a natural defender, but surely it must be acknowledged that he played back there last year with at least one - and later in the season two - bung knees.

That's funny - it's like the recruitment guy has gone "wow, I know it was one of these blokes that really impressed me but I can't remember which - let's get both just to make sure.'

Seems pretty keen which i'm impressed about. Hopefully his twin brother Matthew Laidlaw is equally as keen.
