    Prior and Rowe possible Rookies

    Link

The only part of the article to do with the Swans is :
While overlooked at the weekend, fellow Bushrangers Adam Prior (North Albury), Tim Looby (Shepparton) and Sam Rowe (Walla) could still be picked up in next months AFL rookie draft.

Prior and Rowe will train with reigning premier Sydney Swans in the next three weeks.

If he'd said he was from Burrumbuttock, he'd be a shoo-in I reckon. The commentators would dine out on that for ages.

Tim Looby was a real surprise omission from the draft. (Not as big as ruckman Luke McEntee and beep-test record-holder Luke Rischbieth, but still pretty big.) Was widely tipped to go high-20s or 30s; but if you're 187cm and 89kg, there's a risk that talent scouts will think you have no 'upside' (as they say in the biz), i.e. you only look good b/c you're playing against kids 20kg lighter than you. Anyhoo, Sydney's interest is no doubt stymied by the fact that he ain't a local and therefore we can't put dibs on him.

Very frustrating that all of the big (or biggish) Queensland boys who missed drafting-- Daniel Dzufer, Julian Kannis and Jessie White-- are all ineligible for the rookie draft by only a month or so; in Kannis' case by 2 days! 'Cos I reckon there would be a much smaller 'homesick' factor for a Qld boy to come down here, than go to Melbourne or off west. Nate Roffey, who at 193cm and with a competition athletics background, sounds like a slightly shorter potential LRT clone, is eligible but will almost certainly be a BLions nominated rookie.

Adam Prior would be a terrific rookie pick-up if the following wrap is right:

AFL talent manager Kevin Sheehan says Prior has ?fantastic football smarts? and deserves the chance to prove himself.

?I liken him to a Ryan OKeefe in Sydney, where he might be able to hold down a spot as a third forward and his endurance would really bring out the best in him,? he said.

Sam Rowe is 198cm, 86kg and just turned 19 years old. That's not a bad start. The pluses are that he's good enough to play for the Murray Bushrangers (who are a good team) in the TAC Cup and he made the best players for NSW/ACT at the championship on at least one occasion. So he can't be a complete water buffalo on the field.

The minuses are that absolutely nobody mentioned him as even a possible draft pick, and he was nowhere near the Bushrangers' best player.

Been a few Swans come from that way in the Riverina. Was it Wayne Carroll who's from The Rock?

Not sure about "Christmas" but there have been plenty of Swans players from that area over the years, clubs like Grong Grong Matong, and Mangiplah/Cookadinia United, when the Riverina was part of the Swans zone

I know Daniel McPherson's a Ganmain boy. Colin Hounsell was from Collingullie, which is up that way too. Ricky Quade from Ariah Park.... yeah been a good area over the years. And that's not mentioning the Wagga boys, like a certain Kelly, P.

Wayne Carroll was from Mangoplah-Cookardinia United. It was Matthew Lloyd that was from The Rock-Yerong Creek.
Sam Rowe has just turned 18 and not 19.Kannis is eligible for the Rookie and PSD drafts as he is born on the 15/12/87 but there is a fair chance that Brisbane will pre-list Roffey and Kannis as local rookies.

Not sure about Matthew Lloyd being from up there, but I think Brett Scott, former player and coach was from The Rock - Yerong Creek

This is the Sydney current training list, which I've reproduced below in what I hope isn't a breach of RWO guidelines b/c it's only part of the article.

Sydney - Michael Aylett, Old Scotch; Ed Barlow, Oakleigh Chargers; Troy Bartlett, Wollongong Lions; James Bennett, Belconnen; Dean Davies, North Shore, Trent Goodrem, East Coast; Andrew Hayes, Sydney; Kieren Jack, Pennant Hills; Adam Prior, Murray Bushrangers; Sam Rowe, Murray Bushrangers; Nathan Twomey, Balmain Tigers.

Apart from the names already mentioned, the only surpises there are:

                            a) Michael Aylett- the internet reveals less than nothing about him, apart from the fact that he went to Scotch and now plays for Old Scotch U/19s in the Victorian amateurs. Would be a smoky of at least Vogels proportions, even for a rookie, it seems.

                            b) Ed Barlow- also went to Scotch. Turning 19 in January. 193cm and 83 kg, which is very nice. Played just 4 games for Oakleigh Chargers (relative cellar-dwellers) in the TAC Cup (maybe b/c of school commitments?). Started out in an amazing blaze of glory with 26 and 25 possessions in his first 2 games (being ranked his team's 3rd best in the 1st game, and best in the second), before having a quiet next 2. Got picked for Victoria (and played very well) in the 'Rising Stars Cup' where Vic U/18s play 'the Allies', i.e. all of the other states (apart from SA/WA) combined U/18s team. (Seems like the Vics picked a bit of a 2nd-tier team as few of the draft stars played.) Would replenish our 'Ed' stocks with the departure of Ed Clarke.

I've also noticed on my travels through the TAC Cup that Adam Prior is a ROK clone on more than one level: he kicked 52 goals in the TAC Cup to be the 3rd in the comp's goalkicking list. But he also kicked 37 behinds, including bags of 3.6 and 2.5. So he could be even more productive if he can work on his accuracy. In a year where there are few standout NSW boys, he would have to be a virtual dead cert to be a nominated local rookie.
