Of course I agree. I honestly do.

But why are Malceski, McVeigh and Moore (and to a lesser extent, Schmidt and Willoughby) all on the list if not to do this sort of thing? We've also got Nick D as a mf forward.

Look, I'm not arguing. Just bored, really.

A couple more hours till I get on the grog big-time.

How you know this, baby? The 'you must keep rookies for at least 2 years' rule has been nixed. There can't be any controversy that it's been nixed for local boys-- see, e.g., Ed Clarke. The most compelling evidence I can produce online for the fact that it's been nixed for all players inc. interstaters is (in the absence of the AFL Player Rules) the AFLPA bargaining agreement (warning: long PDF).

There is no equivalent provision to clause 9(a)(i) (players under 18 must be contracted for at least 2 years) or 10.3 ('first year draft choice players', i.e. players added to the senior list and not previously on any senior or rookie list, must be contracted for at least 2 years), for players added to the rookie list.

Then again, I might be barking up the wrong tree and you might have some secret squirrel inside knowledge.

I was just going on what I thought the rule was, honey ( ). If the requirement for interstate rookies to get two years has been removed, so be it.

I think Simon is correct on this. After all, we only had Campbell for one year.

My recollection is that the requirement was eliminated a couple of years back on the basis that clubs would be less willing to take interstate rookies (who are, after all, the "dregs of the draft") if they had to committ to two years. The increased opportunities for players to get at least one year was deemed to outweigh the negative impact of them moving interstate for just one year.]

The two year minimum may still apply for international rookies.

                Have I missed something here?

We took 8 rookies which I thought was the maximum we could have on the list. If that is the case what happened to Stephan Garruba?

I am still basking in the glory so have been fairly relaxed of late and not being so gung ho as some others, may have missed the axing of Stephan.

I believe we are allowed, along with Brisbane to have 9 rookies. We only had 8 this year but I'm unsure of the status of Ryan Quade who may have been the 9th. In any case, Garubba is definitely still on the rookie list.

As sure as I can be that Quade, despite hanging out with the guys a lot, was never officially on the rookie list. Anyhoo, we can have a grand total max of 47 players. 44 in the same way as all other clubs: 38 senior list, and 6 extras comprised of any combination you like of 0 veterans/6 rookies, 1 vet/5 rooks or 2 vets/4 rooks. Plus on top of that 44, just b/c the AFL is in a conspiracy with us, we (and the Blions) get 3 extra local rookies.

So as we had a veteran listed last year (Stevie Nicks), that meant a max of 8 rookies (5 normal, 3 local). No veteran in 2006, so the full complement of 9 rookies. We should give them love while we can, b/c history suggests that at least half of them we won't see for long.

Some notable players who missed out!

Llane Spaanderman - The game he played against the swans was OK, though he would be given another chance (by the swans?)

Andrew Siegert - I though that a club was gonna take him, cos you here others say he is a good player and was returning home to Melbourne for more opportunities?

                        Is this ROK's brother? TOK!?

So Jack isn't one of the 3 local rookies.

Tim O'Keefe is from Seymour and went to Assumption College that is why he played for Calder in 2004.He was with Bendigo Bombers last year.He is not ROK's brother.
Ed Barlow was a NSW local pick being from Bega and boarding at Scotch College in Melbourne. The other locals were Adam Prior (North Albury) and Sam Rowe (Walla Walla) and we are only allowed 3 local picks that's why Keiran Jack was drafted.

Actually this article explains why Jack was drafted rather than a local pick. Let's hope there are no more "the dog ate my homework" stories from him....

"The 18-year-old, who captained the NSW-ACT side at the under-18 championships this year and participated in a pre-draft screening day, was allowed into the rookie draft pool after signing a statutory declaration.

Because the onballer was admitted late, he was made available to all clubs, with Sydney not able to list him as a local rookie."
