Lions lost $1m in their first premiership year, but turned this around into $2m profits thereafter

I think the sponsorship and membership will increase this year. I already know of a number of people who are ready to sign on as members (including my 3 kids).

No doubt, but generating sufficent revenue is the main concern. Whether you make a profit or not is just an accounting entry.

It is much harder to try and find another $2 Million in revenue to keep the place afloat, than just cutting expenses in the short term to remain afloat.

So my point is that we should be looking at increased revenue as a measure of success not profit results.

              And what about the Roos?

And then look at where Carlton is these days.

Its a football club. The objective is to make enough money to stay afloat and competitive. But really a lot of it just helps you get through the bad years.

Yep - same as a non-profit organisation - profits are to build reserves.

I reckon the AFL owes the Swans big time. Consider the new media rights and the $780 million they reaped. In an article in the SMH on 6 Jan 2006 Roy Masters states:-

"Packer, who died three days after ordering the richest sports offer in Australian sport, was moved by the Swans' no-nonsense, combative campaign to win the 2005 AFL flag."

                  and further on:-

"The old boy ratcheted up the bid quite a bit to teach them a lesson (ie Seven and Ten) ........it's true he built the Swans' success into the bid."

So there Mr Demetriou you can thank the Swans for the windfall and any future requests for extra moolah should be favourably considered.

An interesting thing to note is that the Swans are doing things like taking ALL payers to LA, whereas (I read) the Kangaroos are only taking 27.

Also we are taking on a full compliment of rookies, and others are not.

This shows that we are serious about things and far from solely focused on a profit. It means that our short-term profit suffers from these types of things, but is an investment in the future.

How does a few extra players getting a holiday in LA help with the future?

Just small '1 percenters' really, but it all adds up.

The Swans are using it as a team-building exercise amongst other things - e.g. taking the guys to professional US sports events like the NBA (Clippers game) and having rare (for Aussie teams) opportunities to do things such as look at the inner sanctum of the UCLA grid-iron club facilities, etc.

It works just like the business world... To have these little advantages and perks over other organisations helps to retain players and increase morale, as well as broadening their experience and professionalism.

It's amazing how being included in these helps to bond and motivate players and staff.

I watched a video of a team building exercise this morning - they took a group of risk people and sent them to the circus for 3 days to learn to do an act.
