    South Melbourne history

Hope someone can help. I am looking for team info on South Melbourne from 1917 to 1928. I am led to believe that my grandfather played for South Melbourne around this time.

In Jim Main's book, 'Plugger and the Mighty Swans', he lists as an appendix all players who ever played a game for the Swans. This may be a good place to start.

His name was Leslie William Rawle. Dad thinks that he may have been Captain/coach for a time. Thanks for your reply, John Rawle

Way to ruin the dream, Mister Ruin-the-dream.
I knew him as a gentle young man, I cannot say for sure the reasons for his decline
We watched him fade before our very eyes, and years before his time

Found an umpire, Harry (Harold) Rawle, in the 1914 finals series here

There's a (Keith) Rawle at Essendon (1946 and 48 GF) who became captain/coach of Redan

                    There's a George Rawle at North around 1914 - 1918

Man, Google is fun ... Just select advanced options, Rawle for exact phrase and VFL AFL for at least one of the words ...

He was Keith Rawle's father according to the Encyclopedia of League Footballers. Later achieved the distinction of being the oldest debutant in VFL/AFL history when he moved across to Essendon in 1923, aged 33 (although there appears to be some confusion, as the Encyclopedia says 33 despite listing his birthdate as 'c.1892'.
