How many AMs have you been to? Which players do you most like to see there?

AMs?
Oh yeah. That's the second half of the night, isn't it? Gotta love uni holidays. And the fact that I still have another eight or nine of them to go.
Err, on to the question. Probably not that many. I cherish my memories of the old amateurish aftermatches at Flemington Racecourse. The players would get a beer and wander about, actually talked to people. Mark Bayes, Derek Kickett, Paul Kelly, Paul Roos and Dale Lewis were great... they knew how to make an 8yo's week. Most of them knew me by name or some nickname or other, and they'd talk to me. I used to love going to school and telling Essendon and Collingwood fans who had never seen a player about the chat I had with Paul Kelly. Somehow even if we'd been pumped by ten goals, they were cheerful and friendly with fans that they almost certainly didn't want to socialise with.
I can't be bothered these days. Haven't been to one for about two years, and I doubt I'll go to another one. Yes, I'm an adult now and the magic of those days at Flemington has gone, but that's not the problem. I can't stand the corporate style production line that they have now. They only do two a year down here, and the players have two long tables that they sit behind and sign autographs. I think the only current players that I've spoken to are Adam Goodes and Nic Fosdike. That's fine - I have no burning desire to know the players any more - but I'd rather remember how they were when I was eight than pretend that a glorified merchandise stall is worth going to.We hate Anthony Rocca
We hate Shannon Grant too
We hate scumbag Gaspar
But Leo WE LOVE YOU!Comment

Sums up my feelings about AM's these days. No longer the the event where all the players turned up and spent time with the fans. Can still remember Simon Arnott's family talking to my Mum and Dad in 95 at Flemington and spent the whole time ripping into Anthony Rocca and his family (learnt how much he was hated not only by the players but how hated the family was hated by the other families as well because of the special treatment he got). Best AM at Flemington was the one after Lockett had kicked 16 goals. Everyone wanted a piece of him that night.Originally posted by Charlie

These days I leave the player chasing to the kids and stand at the back of the room and sink a few pots, wait to hear from Roosy and then orgainise the group of RWO/Melb CS regulars to head off to Patony's for tea in South Melbourne.Once was, now elsewhereComment
