I can understand it being done for 1 season after a long serving team member retires. But to retire a number should only be done when a member of a team dies whilst still being an active part of the team eg Peter Crimmins of Hawthorn, died of cancer just after they won a premiership, he had been captain up until his cancer stopped him being able to play.
