Considering the side we had in that sounds like an excellent result.

Hmmm...the Swans did better than I thought they would...
My Pokemon brings all the boys to the yard and they're like "Wanna trade cards?"
"Damn right, I wanna trade cards. I can beat you, I've got Charizard!"
Goal Kickers:
Sydney: Ted Richards 3, Paul Currie 2, Luke Ablett, Heath Grundy, David Spriggs, Kristin Thornton, Ryan Brabazon
Essendon: Matthew Lloyd 2, Scott Lucas 2, Jobe Watson 2, Angus Monfries, Courtenay Dempsey, Andrew Welsh, Nathan Lovett-Murray, Paddy Ryder, Chris Heffernan, Ricky Dyson
1st: Syd 2.5 Ess 4.4
A warm and humid night has greeted Essendon and Sydney players at North Sydney Oval - conditions certain to test the fitness levels of both sides. The Essendon match committee has made a late decision to rest former Bomber captain James Hird from the game.
Essendon has made a sluggish start to the exhibition match against Sydney but has started to find its feet late in the quarter. Matthew Lloyd found himself all alone in the goalsquare to kick Essendon's first before quick goals to Angus Monfries (a superb right foot snap) and a running goal to Courtenay Dempsey put the Bombers in front.
Earlier sydney had kicked the first goal of the game courtesy of a Luke Ablett long-bomb in the opening minutes. Youngster Heath Grundy marked 40m out and kicked accurately to give Sydney their second goal. Best players for Essendon were Angus Monfries, Jason Winderlich, Nathan Lovett-Murray and Matthew Lloyd.
2nd: Syd 6.5 Ess 9.5
Essendon has looked for a far more cohesive unit in the second quarter. Jason Winderlich has been excellent off half back setting up many atacking moves. Kepler Bradley has also been outstanding off half back.
Sydney kicked the first goal of the second quarter courtesy of Ted Richards but essendon was dominant for the next ten minutes of the game kicking five goals and establishing a lead of 30 points. The Bombers let Sydney back in late in the quarter, conceding goals to Kristin Thornton and Ted Richards. The former Bomber Richards has been one of the better players for the Swans playing at full forwward.
3rd: Syd 8.8 Ess 10.9
It was an uninspiring quarter from Essendon who struggled to put any fluent football together on the tight North Sydney Oval ground.
Paddy Ryder was Essendon's lone goakicker after marking 35m out directly in front and kicking accurately.
Ted Richards was proving a handful for the Essendon defence and he added another goal to his tally giving him a total of three for the game. Youngster Paul Currie kicked the Swans second for the quarter to bring them within 13-points at the final change. Japanese recruit Michito Sakaki came onto the ground and got one kick and laid a tackle. Sakaki became the first Japanese player to play in an official AFL fixture tonight.
4th: Essendon scored the first goal of the last quarter when Jobe Watson was awarded a free kick in the goal square. It was his second goal of the game.
Ryan Brabazon marked and goaled from 50m out before Chris Heffernan replied for the Bombers

Just got home from the game and was more than happy with what I saw. Not only were most of the premiership players missing, the Swans were also without most of the next tier - ie the likes of Schmidt, Willoughby, Davis, Shaw and McVeigh. Either that or they all had exceedingly quiet games. That was a bit disappointing since I was looking forward to seeing these guys play.
That meant that almost all of the new players played closed to a full game and they have to be commended for their determination and willingness to make a real contest of it. In the second half the Bombers were playing like millionaires and our young Swans were making them pay. I reckon they more than broke even in the second half in the midfield and it was only a lack of composure and experience in the forward line that stopped them getting closer on the scoreboard.
LRT played a very very good game on Lucas. He conceded two goals in the first half but throughout the game was spoiling well, took some nice marks, read the ball well on the ground and set up play nicely.
Vogels was the slightly surprising choice to stand Lloyd and he too did exceptionally well. Lloyd was trying to throw his weight around and got shown up in the process.
Dempster played in defence and had a solid, composed game.
Richards was dangerous up forward, playing as a FF. He took some nice contested marks and kicked three goals.
Malceski was particularly lively in the second half.
One thing that stood out with the newbies is how many of them look the same - a whole troop of blond moptops, some of them badly in need of a hair cut. It made it a bit hard to tell who was who at times, but Thornton was probably the pick of them. His confidence grew as the game went on and he was one who took advantage of the Bombers' second half arrogance.
Brabazon also went OK, while Laidlaw wasn't as prominent but executed a couple of very nice long kicks. Currie kicked a super banana goal from the boundary line.
Moore was lively and worked hard at midfield contests.
Didn't see much of Garruba after the first 5 minutes but he has noticeably bulked up. Gone is the skinny kid and in is someone to rival Moore's physique.
Wasn't a particularly good first outing for Chambers. He looked a bit lost in the ruck and missed an absolute sitter of a mark in the midfield early in the game. On the basis of tonight he's a long way behind Doyle in the pecking order.

I was really hoping that Vogels would get the job on Lloyd. All Vogel's football before moving to Sydney suggested that he would make a good tall defender . . . strong, fast and a good mark. With the recruiting of Richards, full-back might be his best chance of becoming a permanent fixture.
Did you get the impression that this might be the start of a long-term role, Liz, or was it just an experiment born of desperation?
LRT. What a game, picked up around 20+ disposals off CHB and looked so confident now running from defence.
Vogels. This boy can play defence. Kept Lloyd quiet for pretty much the whole game.
Superted. I can't wait to see our HFF line with Hall, ROK and Superted patrolling it. Took some awesome grabs.
Chambers. Average, but so was Jolly in his first outing with the bloods.
Doyle. Thought he too was also average but he did look confident running around and broke a few packs.
YOUNGINS.
Currie - Wow this guy has some goal kicking ability. He was the one that kicked 3 in LA. His banana kick was the goal of the game.
Simon Phillips - This kid was explosive through the midfield. Very small though.
Garubba - Liz is right, he has significantly bulked up. Looked very zippy on the wing.
Moore - Gun. Made 3 excellent smothers. Looks alot fitter.
Eski - Found the pill in the 2nd but some of his kicks although beautiful to watch went to a few Bombers.
We definately took alot more out of this match then the Bombers who had more of their stars on show. Our youngsters really showed something out there and i'm sure ROK will have a great time watching these blonde rookies kick arse in Canberra

Hard to tell. There really was no-one else available. Playing a 19yo gangly youth on Lloyd would have been cruel. Reg is probably not big enough - he looked shorter tonight than I thought he was.
Having witnessed this evening's effort, I wouldn't be surprised if Roos tries it again, even if he'd only intended it as a one-off. I don't think Vogels was beaten in a one-on-one contest all night - is problem was he lost Lloyd a couple of times and allowed him to get on his own in space. But he wasn't just negating either - he was supporting LRT in setting up play from the backline.
