who would be your top 10?
    1. Voss
    2. Riccuto
    3. Buckley
    4. Gardiner
    5. Cousins
    6. Goodes
    7. Hayes
    8. Mcleod
    9. Mecuri
    10. Wanganeen
    - Impossible is just a big word thrown around by small men who find it easier to live in a world they've been given, than to explore the power they have to change it. Impossible is not a fact, it's an opinion. Impossible is not a declaration, it's a dare. Impossible is potential. Impossible is temporary. Impossible is nothing!

Well... different players bring different things to their club. For instance, for pure playing ability you'd put Lappin ahead of Archer. But Archer is more important, and adds more to the 'Roos team, than Lappin does for Brissie. Makes the top 10 thing difficult for anything except intra-club comparisons.

But what the hell. For pure football ability, and form this year as a second deciding factor:
      1. Michael Voss
      2. Andrew McLeod
      3. Adam Goodes
      4. Nathan Buckley
      5. Justin Leppitsch
      6. Matthew Lloyd
      7. Nick Riewoldt
      8. Michael Gardiner
      9. Nigel Lappin
      10.Matthew Pavlich

As you can see, I have a tendency towards the 190cm-odd Defender/Forward/Ruck/Ruck Rover/Goal Umpire/Skills Coach types... of which Goodesy is the best ATM.

In terms of Staff, he's playing the best football by far that he's played in many many years. Maybe its just that he's injury free for the first time in years? IMHO he's actually showing what he's capable of, and what we knew he was capable of when he was a Swan, and that we got fed up of waiting for him to display during that time.

As for my best 5 players in the comp:

        1) M Voss (with daylight to...)
        2) A McLeod
        3) N Buckley
        4) J Hird
        5) B Cousins

I haven't gone for 10 because after these 5 I start to struggle to find guys who you would want lining up for you no matter what, and who are missed severely when they don't line up for their teams.

My form 5 players for this year (in no particular order):
        A Goodes
        L Hayes
        M Voss
        N Buckley
        M Gardiner

        I'm on the Chandwagon!!!

If you cannot compete for the premiership, it's better to be young and exciting than middle-aged and dowdy.

          Mike_B,

I do agree with a lot of the points you made there in your post, however I don't quite rate Buckley as highly as you and others do. I think his impact on games of football, for a player who gets 30+ possessions nearly every week, isn't that big.

          That's why I rate him about 9th.

motor I think your list is very good, however i do have a big question mark over mecuri - he has been one of essendons worst performers until last fridays game against hawthorn - one good game

            Voss
            Gardiner

            Goodes
            Hayes

That's probably the most convincing list I've seen thus far, at least based on current season's form. Might quibble about Hird (though on reputation and past performance he'd make it) - he was brilliant against the Pies but has he hit that level in any of the rest of his games. I might be tempted to replace him with Riccuito, or even Coughlan.

Elite players are elite players because they dominate and perform at that level over a number of seasons.

Whilst i am a huge fan of Goodes, he has yet to do that

Please inform me how Mark Mercuri gets in the top 10? He hasn't had a kick for three years.

                  Where is James Hird?

Surely he is in the top 10.

Surely there are better players than him going around.

Firstly O'loughlin is better than him, there are even better players on the eagles' list such as Cousins, Kerr and Judd.

Problem with these threads P46 is they are always subjective so there is no real right or wrong answer/list.

Why is Wirrapunda there plugge46 ? Because I actually take interest in what is happening with other players at other clubs
Take a look and you may see.

Oh and by the way Plugger46, while the players you have mentioned in comparison to Wirrapunda may have had better OVERALL careers, the topic is on this years form and brownlow contention and Wirrapunda is above all the players you compared him to in this CURRENT season.
