    A great team effort

A fantastic win with everyone contributing . It was very pleasing to see the last minute inclusions doing well . This week promises to be a mega game against Essendon.

    By REBECCA WILLIAMS

WHEN Richmond forward Matthew Richardson crashed into Ben Mathews late in the third quarter, it wasn't only the Swans defender who was carried off the field.

Any hopes the Tigers had of becoming the first side to break the Perth hoodoo went with him at the MCG on Saturday night.

The Tigers had enjoyed a productive run before the incident, kicking three goals in five minutes to slash the Swans' lead.

But the delay as Mathews, who had been knocked out, was taken off on a stretcher did nothing for the Tigers' momentum.

It was a different game after three-quarter time as the Swans ran all over the Tigers.

Coach Danny Frawley lamented that a second straight loss had put the Tigers back in the pack.

In the past five rounds, the Tigers have played three sides in the top eight - Port Adelaide, West Coast and Sydney - and lost to all three.

It was a far more confident outlook for the Swans, who could draw numerous positives from the win.

Sydney won without Daryn Cresswell, Jason Saddington and Michael O'Loughlin, all late withdrawals, but had no shortage of players to step up to fill the void.

The Swans had the midfield battle won, with key Tiger Kane Johnson tagged out of the game by Brett Kirk.

Johnson, who needed to make his presence felt in the absence of injured skipper Wayne Campbell, was held to a modest 12 disposals.

Jude Bolton, playing on Mark Coughlan, was busy all night, while Paul Williams and Tadhg Kennelly also gave plenty of drive.

Given the comings and goings from last season, I think we have done better than I had dared hope for already in 2003. The players and Roosie must be given due credit for this. On paper we shd have beaten the kangas, but in this competition, with only a relatively slight difference between 2 and 16, it means winning multiple games on end is pretty near impossible -- for all but Brizzie.
Season 2003 has proved promising in terms of developing the young players, and lets hope we can make Mike Shehan, et al, eat his words....last indeed!!!
"Davis...Davis has kicked 2...he snaps from 40...dont tell me, dont tell me, hes kicked a goal....unbelievable stuff from Nick Davis, can you believe this, he's kicked 3 final quarter goals and Swans are within 3 points..."

Not taking anything away from our boys, you'll have to admit that Stafford killed us in the ruck. Fortunately the rovers tied it up or got the turn over.

we still had passengers, the main offenders IMO were warfe and schauble... schauble stats are quite a misconception of how he did considering the late "lets kick it backwards episode" and warfe with 4 touches and not even being in the lowest 6 of game time is AMAZING...

this week, i think we should drop warfe, stevens and ???

A very even side and everyone did there bit, just spending the Public Hoilday watching the replay.

Wish Staff had played like that for us.

Robert Walls is a huge one for ruckmen.

                  {As an aside I wonder if he reads our site as he commented that LRT is known as 'LRT'. If so - hi Robert! }

Anyway, I am less of a fan of ruckmen. Sure they can win the tap outs, as Staff did on Sat, but it is more important who gets the takeaway, and that depends on the midfield. It's fairly rare that a ruckman is able to perfectly tap it to the waiting rovers. Of course, they can establish a set play whereby the ruckman can tap it to a certain area, but a smart opposition midfield can work that out and counter it, and also bounces are so unpredictable that is rather difficult.

I think the bigger value for ruckmen is around the ground, marking, blocking space and kicking goals.

Stafford killed Ball in the ruck. No doubt. The fact is that we trade 8th pick and a 3rd round pick for Ball and get only 13rd pick with Daffy for Stafford, makes me a little uneasy. We might either have paid too dear for Ball or sold Stafford too cheap.

He was a very good tap ruckman with us, however his injuries in 99 really put a dampener on his performance. As for kicking goals, I think he has had more opportunity playing in the forward line for Richmond. There's no doubt he's playing better for Richmond than he did for the last year with us, but before that he was a top ruckmen, hence the enormous frustration when he was underperforming. I think the move to Richmond and the fresh start has done him the world of good, which most people expected.

Given Staff's performance in 2001 I'm not sure if we could have received a lot more for him. Also, the deal was related to the Hall transfer so you can't do a simple comparison like that.

I think Ball has performed as well for us as Stafford has for Richmond this year, and Ball was significantly better in 2001. The main problem has been Ball's injuries and the loss of 2002, so that makes the transfer more borderline, but it's probably not one of those things can could have been foreseen.

To me the most notable thing about all our wins is that we haven't yet played our best football. In each win I have seen areas that need to be improved on. This is a good sign as it means we can only get better

I agree - particularly in the last two. Although I'd word that last sentence a little differently - more like we have a lot of potential upside.
