You can't win a flag without.....

    A midfield General.

We have a couple of good lieutenants (Bolton, Kirk) a major (Williams) and a Colonel (Cresswell) but none of these can take the game by the scruff, turn it round, control it a la Buckley, Hird, Voss, Carey, Bradley, Ricciuto, McLeod, Harvey (Robert), Kelly

I was hoping Williams would be the man but it is clear that he does not respond well to tagging pressure and either his skills let him down (as on Sat nite) or he just goes missing.

Anyway he seems to play breaking forward of the pack rather than controlling quarterback style (Buckley).

It's the only position we can't do without. Who (wearing Red and White) is going to control the midfield?

Do McVeigh or Sundquist have this quality? Within two years we need someone to match it with Judd, Goddard, Ball, Hodge, Salopek, Hasleby etc.

    Any ideas?

Nice theory, but I disagree (both with the theory and the "ranks" of the players mentioned).

LOL. I don't particularly rate that list. Besides, we've had plenty of awesome midfielders over the years, with bugger all flags to show for it (also see: Buckley).

Besides, Kel' can still command the midfield and he can't be tackled!

The Kangaroos never really had a single player like that in the midfield.

How can you not rate Judd, Ball and Goddard?? These blokes are superstars in the making. They will be the next Buckly, Hird etc for sure. Maybe you should change your name to Madcow?

Ok but they did have Carey so that is the exception - ie he could (and did) turn games when he chose to.

So maybe our General will be a Kouta/Carey type.....Adam Goodes.

Actually come to think of it he has been doing that. In our last couple of wins he has floated back, mopped up and got the run going just when the opposition looked like they were going to run over us. Mmmm

I think Goodes could become a key player in a run to a premiership.

We have Micky and Goodesy, both can turn games of football, the former more so.

                They're enough for me.

What's this quarterback crap. It's Aussie Rules not Gridiron.

Playing forward of the play makes a player more creative and dangerous around goals, than sitting off half back and picking off the easy possessions.

And it makes it easier to shake a tag if you are less predictable, than playing an obvious set role that Buckley plays.

Appears to me that the past few weeks Willo has shaken the tags, and as the team gets better it will be hard to keep the tags on Swans players as per Brisbane.

We might not have a game turner, but I think we turn games around as a team. I think its better than having one player do the work on his own.
Using hypothesis testing via confidence intervals:
Nick Davis mark inside 50 = goal

That thinking is so wishful I'm gonna sleep very sweet dreams tonight. I like it a lot.....but has it ever led to a flag? (Carlton '71 perhaps)
