    Swans chase top Cat

GEELONG saviour Brian Cook is on the shortlist of chief executive candidates to lead the Sydney Swans out of their financial woes.

Cook - credited with rescuing Geelong.

Embattled Swans chairman Richard Colless believes the CEO appointment will be the most important decision the club will make over the next five years.

Getting the right man for the job will be a major factor in convincing the AFL that it should offer the Swans a $1million-plus rescue package to keep the club afloat.

The Swans are determined that past management practices, which have plunged the club to a forecast $2million debt by the end of October, will not be tolerated,

The AFL and rival clubs have indicated they will support Sydney but only if they improve their fiscal competence.

Colless believes the Swans need "world best" management practices after it was discovered last July that the club was nose-diving into debt.

Colless alerted the AFL to the Swans' plight in August and has since had a hands-on role in the administration of the club.

In the same period, former Swans CEO Kelvin Templeton resigned and his successor Colin Seery was recently moved on to "special projects", effectively leaving the club without a chief administrator, and allowing Colless and fellow board member Andrew McMaster calling the shots.

A Swans spokesman revealed that Cook, who has been credited with rescuing Geelong from financial disaster after reducing their debt from $8 million to $1.3 million, was very much in the picture.

The club has appointed an international head-hunting company to find the right man.

Cook is so highly considered within AFL circles that the Cats CEO is also being touted as a replacement for outgoing AFL boss Wayne Jackson.

The need to find the right person for the Swans' top job gained even more urgency yesterday when Jackson put an end to speculation that the AFL would step in and take over the club's administration.

"There is no suggestion that we would take control of the Swans administration or indeed any other football club," Jackson said.

"It is appropriate that Richard as chairman of the board accepts the ultimate responsibility ... and he's done that."

Jackson said Colless had to be given credit for alerting the AFL to the Swans' plight in August last year.

Sources have revealed that an independent report by the AFL's corporate consultants into the Swans' financial affair was highly critical of the club's management for not anticipating the looming cash crisis after corporate Sydney abandoned the club for the Rugby World Cup.

    Cool

Now.... GO DEMETRIOU for the AFL job... then just blow the Cats away in terms of salary.

It'd be a good investment I reckon, even with our current financial problems. Cook is highly regarded.

Make no mistake the Eagles would not be the force off the field that they arewithout this guy imo Cook could be just what we require to set us up off field long term.

Well we can't go and throw money at Cook, but........

If we offer the same amount as Geelong we won't be seen to throw more money away. Hopefully he does get the job because his track record is second to none.

Rob, I see no problem with throwing money at Cook. Regardless of how little we've got, it's worth nothing if we have another inept money manager. You've got to pay the best to get the best, especially to entice him interstate.

Charlie I don't think the other 15 clubs or the AFL for that matter would be happy if after giving us $2million basically to stay alive, that we go out and throw a huge amount of money at Cook.

I think he would be the best man available and is worth whatever we pay him BUT lets not throw a stupid amount of money at him. Anyway what about giving the CEO role to Andrew Ireland??? He has a good track record, has expirence of running an AFL club in a Rugby State and wouldn't cost us a cent more than we are paying him now.

Well we can now count Cook out of the race. He's more interested in the AFL top job, failing that staying at Geelong. Now to cricket boss Malcolm Speed. Thoughts anyone.

Andrew Ireland said very clearly at the Redbacks breakfast that he didn't want to do the CEO's job .... could have just been words, but he seemed very certain of that. He left Brissie to have a break from the pressure and was enticed back into a specifically football role.

I understand that Bron and he did say he wanted to get away from the job of CEO. But in our current problems he would be the perfect person for the job. He knows the market and he would cost anymore than what he is already getting, or at the very least the pay raise wouldn't be that great. Highly rated by the other clubs, including Collingwood who nearly got him a few years back.

But as Bron said its up to him if he want it or not

Mal Speed is a former Melbourne barrister. He has limited financial credentials. He is however a proven administrator. I think the job we have vacant requires highly developed business/financial skills. Mal Speed would not be a great candidate.

One of our problems has been that we seem to have promoted from within as a reward for loyalty etc. The Swans are a multi million dollar business and need an excellent financial controller and someone who can get major corporates onboard. We must find the best candidate from around Australia but have to only pay as much as is necessary. No $500K contracts.
