Interesting hypothetical.

I honestly believe that if we hadn't got Plugger when we did, AFL in Sydney wouldn't be where it is now. Maybe I'm placing too much emphasis on his contribution, but he was a large reason (not the only one, I admit) for 1996, plus he also gave us larger than life figure that the media suddenly loved writing stories about.

More tangibly, Barassi was quite open at the time that if he hadn't landed Lockett, he wouldn't have gone after Roos as well, that he didn't think it would be worth Roos' while coming here as the only big name injection. Then we almost certainly wouldn't have him as our coach, and then who knows?

If a player of Lockett's calibre, type and reputation and at the age of 29 came onto the market, would we want him. If we didn't have Hall (or an equivalent) I'd say probably yes. And though he is a second rate Lockett*, I'd be interested even in Neitz if we didn't already have Hall.


* Before anyone jumps on me, I know that's a simplistic description and is a tad harsh on Neitz - very good player and with a different style to Lockett - but you get my drift...

Fair dinkum why you want Neitz. For a start he does not make a genuine presence on the field. If he doesn't get a touch early he sooks and shuts up shop.

How you could put him the same class as BBBH for hardness at the ball is beyond me.

Neitz is a one grab one effort player.

Of course he has really stamped himself as great leader this week by getting thoroughly pissed at Crown and making a genuine A***hole of himself. Heaps of mates to look after him when he was sozzled, or did they take a wide berth when he got shickered.

I may have missed something, but I haven't heard him apologise to the people who help pay him, the members. Why, because real leaders have one of those ingredients that set them apart. It's called moral courage. Didn't have the guts. All he did was give a glib statement to say he was in the wrong place at the wrong time. Please spare me. Then his coach said it was a one off.

Did you hear Tom Hafey. He was scathing, saying that it was sad for the game when players during a week's break go out and think it is fine to write themselves off.

Tom's right. How can an elite player let alone captain expect to keep the right level of health and fitness if he is out on the turps. And when you look at it their fade outs are more and more loking like a fitness problem.

You would not believe how many so called current affairs commentators, sports scribes etc. are saying lay off him. If I was a Melbourne supporter and indeed if it was a Swans player I would be absolutely ropeable.

Then again it seems that it is probably symptomatic of the attitude and discipline at Melbourne at the moment.

We don't need the Neitz type.

As for the Saints players Gehrig and Lawrence it will be adios at the end of the season.
