    Reserves beat Eastlake in cliffhanger

The Swans Reserves defeated Eastlake by four points on Saturday in a game that came right down to the last shot at goal.

The Swans started well with Josh Thewlis kicking a goal 20 seconds in and Nick Malceski kicking another quickly. Bright made it three for the Swans with a snap following a smart handball from Malceski. Twelve minutes in Eastlake registered their first goal but a goal from 40 metres by Amon Buchanan kept the home side three goals up. Eastlake then made it two before a snap at goal from Jarrad McVeigh was accurate. At quarter time the Swans 5.6(36) lead Eastlake 2.2(14).

Ryan Crawford got the ball rolling in the second term by smothering an Eastlake kick and soccering the ball through for a goal. Malceski continued the Swans run by marking at 50 metres and goalling. Eastlake kicked another to add to their score but an excellent snap from an acute angle, 35 metres out by Paul Bevan put the Swans five goals in front. Eastlake kicked another two for the quarter to put them on 5.6(36) while a goal to McVeigh after a 50 metre penalty made the Swans score 9.9(63) at the main break.
Eastlake opened the third quarter scoring and two minutes later Buchanan snapped his second for the Swans. Eastlake reduced the margin but a goal to Luke Ablett inflated it again. Scott McGlone took advantage of a good centre clearance and the Swans looked to end the term still five goals up, Eastlake though had other ideas and put their eighth goal on the board. The third term break saw the Swans 12.12(84) lead Eastlake 8.9(57).
An intercepted Eastlake kick by McGlone, who kicked a goal started the last quarter. Eastlake had come out firing though and kicked two goals in quick succession. Not long after Buchanan kicked his third, from 50 metres on the run, Eastlake went on a spree adding four more goals to their score, reducing the margin to just five points and working the clock to the 26 minute mark. The game was not over though and Eastlake hurried the ball to their forward line and had a shot on goal, but a Swans defender touched it on the line in a game saving effort and the final score stood at 14.15(99) to Eastlake 14.11(95).
The Swans remain at second position on the AFL Canberra ladder and will have to beat the Wagga Tigers on Sunday (June 29, 2:15pm) at Robertson Oval (Wagga Wagga) if they wish to take out first place over Belconnen.
