    Umpiring

I am not one to complain about the umpiring, but how about that for inconsistency. The very soft "in the backs" that were given to Port but not to us was frigtening.

Wanganeen only had to get near the ball to get an easy in the back with a stage, yet was caught in possession a number of times but not pinged. The lack of reward for our tackling was epitomised in the last quarter when Pickett was strongly retarded 3 times in the same action yet it was play on.

The free given to Wanganeen late in the game for holding was typical of how it went all game. That free he was given in the 3rd quarter at a vital stage, again for in the back when the replay showed it was clearly a falling in the side, "dive" situation showed how he is given the "world". He is one of he few in the comp who consistently get a staged free, when most other situations are play on.

There was another against Cressa in the last quarter on the far side that was a farce. Yet in the last quarter Davis was driven in the back about 20 metres for no result and one of our players was clearly felled at CHF for no result from the umps.

It was tough conditions which should have meant a lot more playons and consistency to both sides in the crunches.

Goals from frees will be interesting to see, and what about that mark to Lade late in the game which everyone in Australia except the ump saw that Warfe had clear first full hands.

Why wasn't there a free down the ground when Cressa was felled well after he kicked in the 2nd quarter.

Yes Nico, that was a good mark by Warfe that was paid to Lade!

You have to wonder about an umpire that paid that - one of the more blatant wrong decisions in a long time.

As for Wanganeen - as I said in another thread - get on him for the Brownlow - the umps love him! 2nd worst Brownlow medallist I've seen - Woewodin is the worst.

Even all the neutrals watching it in the pub I was in thought the umpiring was outrageous. Port deserved to win, but it should have been a lot closer than that.
And what is Goldspink's problem with us? It's a worry because he usually gets the big games. I wouldn't like to see him umpiring us in a sudden death finals game.

Have to agree, there did seem to be a few free kicks we got that I thought "oh cool, what was that for....oh well, not gonna complain!"

Goldspink should be umpiring in the country next week - all 3 of them listened to the crowd when deciding what to do.

the way the umps adjudicated, you'd think the game was played in perfect conditions.

The truth, unfortunately, is the the players who are first to the ball will always get the frees. We just needed more winners.

And speaking of umps....anyone know why they were in Orange today? I thought the whole point was to make them MORE visible. White would've been better!!!!

Both Port and Sydney have white in their designs - a better choice would have been yellow IMHO.

I'm not one to make excuses about umpiring when we lose, and I won't today. Port won the game on merit, but it IS frustrating to see soft frees given against your side - I realise I'm biased though - if the port supporters acknowledged that they had the better of the umpiring then I KNOW we got the pointy end of the stick

177th Senior AFL Match - Round 4, 2009 - Sydney vs Carlton, SCG. This is obviously out of date. I suppose I'll update it once I could be bothered sitting down with the fixture and working it out....

That was by far the worst umpiring I have seen all year. I know the game was already lost, but that kick in the last minute against Leo was an absolute joke, especially considering it was in front of goal.

lol i know, I know. But even white would've bene better than Orange. Seriously? What were they thinking?

Errr.. so are you and the SO back on speaking terms after the game? Or does it take a couple of days?

Bloody disgrace, btw, could Montgomery have been pinged for a deliberate of bounds when a kick in went over him and he deliberately hit it out so a free wasnt given? it would have been given against us though.
What have we done to Goldspink and Schmidt before?
                            - Impossible is just a big word thrown around by small men who find it easier to live in a world they've been given, than to explore the power they have to change it. Impossible is not a fact, it's an opinion. Impossible is not a declaration, it's a dare. Impossible is potential. Impossible is temporary. Impossible is nothing!

I find I'm quite rational when watching games against Geelong now, so as not to receive a frosty reception from the GF

But anyway I'm digressing. While we're talking about umpires, is there any sane reason why they're wearing black shorts with the red/orange/yellow gear? Wouldn't it make more sense to go all in one colour?
