    Brett Kirk (27) - 13 gms, 186 poss (5.09%)
    Hope that worked out.

It's interesting to see that this season we have a lot more people with over 5% of the team total - on the one hand, those at the top are sharing the load more than in the days of Cresswell, Schwass and Kelly. On the other hand, this indicates that those outside this group aren't doing a hell of a lot. At any rate, it is undoubtedly a good sign that there are so many young players getting plenty of the ball in 2003.

Interesting stats - thanks Donners. I think the key thing, which is something I've noted after our good wins, is that we are now playing like a team and relying less (relatively speaking) on few individuals. One or two more absolute gun midfielders would be nice though!

To be fair, Simon Arnott led Geelong in possessions not too long ago and was delisted about a year later. Andrew Bomford got a decent amount of the ball at Sydney, and everybody was calling for him to go. I don't think Mathews is quite in that category, but you can't really make an argument as to the quality of a player based purely on his number of possessions. I do think he is a lot better than many people claim, though.

BTW, I can expand this back as far as 1991 if anybody is interested.

My theory is that once you got enough of the ball (said over 5% of the team's total possessions), it is then the matter of how you use the ball. Take for example McPherson, i was the opposition would not mind if he got 100% of the possession. He is not damaging enough.

5% isn't that high - it equates to 1/20th of the total and when you only have 22 players in the team it's about what most of the non-rookies should be getting in a team that spreads its possessions around like the Swans currently are. Of course, if you're looking at it over the season then it also depends on how many games you've played.

Possessions on their own are pretty meaningless though...

Please excuse my ignorance, but is a possession the same as a disposal? Effective disposals would give a better picture of a player in terms how well they are playing. I don't think we had too many on saturday

Yeah, just kicks & handballs, regardless of whether they find their target.

Can anyone remember the last time we finished a season with a single standout player finishing in the AFL Possession List?

We don't have a vacuum/hoover/ball magnet in the team and haven't since Schwatta lost form!

I think Jude can get up there in the future.

Liz's point is valid, 5% is low but we haven't had a 30+ possession player for 8 years.

In 1995, Kel averaged 22 a game. They were 22 beauties admittedly.

Sydney Swans have not got the game plan that revolves around one ball magnet. In fact Cressa's 34 touches was extrordinary for him and any Swan for that matter.

Cressa and Schwass went at 27-28 per game for a couple of years.

Anyway, here are a couple more years for comparison. I'm missing a game from 1991 and 1992, but one game won't really make that much of a difference to them. Note the age of the midfield in 1993 and 1994, just before our big run, and compare it to the current one...
