    Reserves

Any news on how they went

    Particularly

    Ablett - Saddington and James?

From the very little bit I saw, Saddo just wandered around looking comfortable and waiting for his call-up back to the firsts, Ablett looked okay, Frosty looked like a dud, Malcescki looks like a top player, and I didn't see James.

Saddo apparently was solid, and will be knocking on the door for selection next week. Heath James played the first 20 mins of each quarter, took a good mark late in the game, and came through unscathed. He said at the aftermatch that all he's looking to do is get through training this week to play next weekend.

      I'm on the Chandwagon!!!

If you cannot compete for the premiership, it's better to be young and exciting than middle-aged and dowdy.

Watched the second half, the first time I've made it to watch any reserves footy this year. Seemed like a pretty lacklustre match with low intensity and ordinary skills. Saddo didn't dominate but looked in a different class with the ease with which he took marks. Sunny impressed me, as did Meiklejohn. Didn't see James until he took that super mark towards the end. Was very relieved when I realised it was him because up to then I was worried that he'd injured himself again.

I didn't see the match, but I did speak to Heath James about it. they won comfortably. Heath played 3/4 ... really the first 20 minutes of each quarter he said. He was feeling pretty comfortable, but his goal is to play next week. Seemed pretty perky.

This is a question for people who see the ressies regularly... would Malceski and/or Thewlis benefit from a couple of games in the seniors this year, or are they better off being left 'til next year?

Both of them sound like they are classy handlers of the ball, as well as being physically developed. Are they ready?

Of the resserves I have seen Malceski should be left until next year - he may have talent - he is way to slight for AFL.

Thewlis may be some chance with some consistency - I would be a bit surprised if McVeigh debuted this year as well as he is very slight at that level let alone AFL.

Dempster would be an outside chance

Big objective for the off-season must be to find someone who can fatten up some of the young lads - in the right way, of course. We seem to have some talent at the bottom end of the list but Powell, McVeigh, Sunny, Malceski, Hunt and Dempster could all do with some bulk in a hurry. Adding Saddo, LRT, Kennelly to the list wouldn't do any harm either!

Bron, you spoke to nearly everyone up on stage. Are you the only interviewer who tells the players the answers before THEY answer.

The aftermatches have fallen to ridiculous levels of late. I don't think I'll be paying $40extra when I can sit and relax over a drink at the Fox & Lion without kids being made to do the chicken dance, or needing to know what MASH stands for. When only 2 players turn-up, you have to ask yourself whether it is seriously worth it.

Still, I DO get to meet my fellow RWOers. But I could do that at the Fox & Lion as well.

Seriously Luffy, why not just have a replay of the game on a big screen until the players are ready to talk? If people find looking at a footy game boring, then you have to seriously question why they turn up in the first place.

Seriously,go to the Scholars Pub after a Port away match and see how a serious footy club runs its after-matches. Just footy people who love their footy club, and are there to want to talk about the game/meet up with friends etc.

                      Give Thewlis a run

Apart from the reserves players who have already had a shot in the first team, I thought Thewlis was the most liklely looking player, I'd really like to see him play before the end of the season.

Meiklejohn and Sunny were both good, as lizz said. Poor old Meiklejohn - if Doyle gets back soon, we'll have four big blokes and Goodesy will still be doing his bit of ruckwork. Its hard to see how they'll all fit into one team, although the three youngsters are all quite mobile. We could use the four of them as light-towers.

Powell seemed even better this week (apart from his landing capabilities), so the games in the ACTFL are obviously giving some useful experience.

                      Go Thewlis.

I also saw all of yesterdays game, Heath played well had a consistant go at it. Backed himself and went in hard, had us holding our breath each time.

Noggy was very good. Worked hard at it. We think he's trimmed down a little and looks good for it. He must be knocking on the selection door.

Josh, is going to develop into a very good player. He is versatile and goes hard at it. However I think his attack of the ball can sometimes be off, with him over running the contest. He reminds me of a puppy, full of enthusiasm wanting to be involved, but sometimes too eager. I would hate to see him towelled in the seniors, I'd give him a full year down in the reserves. But then again, playing up against quality players could be what he needs.

Malceski is also playing well, but needs to bulk up.

                            Frosty was very quiet.

Saddo is just on another level altogether. Hopefully he was able to get enough of a run into him to return next week.
