    One that got away

Brent Staker ex Rams now Eagle scored 2 goals with his 1st 2 kicks at AFL level against the Hawks.. Also did a few other good things after coming on late in the game. Staker is a good prospect with size who will fill out and develop into a KPP. He has been playing very well in the WAFL playing at CHF and CHB.

He's hardly a local boy though - he hails from Broken Hill, which is closer to Adelaide than to Sydney!

Two goals with his first two kicks: he could be as good as Ryan Fitzgerald!

Staker does hail from Broken Hill which is closer to Sydney than Perth. He did play for the Rams after being relocated to Canberra . He did his schooling at Erindale College in the Tuggeranong Valley . IMO he is a big miss for the Swans , particularly, after seeing the Swans Reserves beaten by the Ainslie Roos today. Most of the Swans' younger players are on the small side and a player like Staker would have been a very handy pick up as a potential KPP.

We only had one pick before Staker (McVeigh or Salopek was the choice, don't you think?) Davis (23 trade) and Dempster (34 Father/Son)

Just noticed that Collingwood used their Nick davis trade to pick at 21 ....... Another from NSW/ACT Rams. (Bo Nixon) LOL do they never learn?

I take your point Sharp9 and I know that McVeigh has big wraps but I always liked the idea of developing a KPP.

It?s the boyhood dream ? a goal with your first kick in the big league.

Who could forget Quinten Lynch?s first kick for an enormous goal as West Coast got over Carton by a point at Optus Oval, or Daniel Metropolis? first four which resulted in majors?

But the record is held by Clen Dinning ? no relation to West Coast?s inaugural captain, the brilliant Ross ? with an astounding six goals with his first six kicks in 1935 for the Blues.

And while few would dare to dream of goals with the first two kicks in the AFL, that?s exactly what West Coast Eagles youngster Brent Staker achieved on Friday night.

And he?s still on track to catch Denning ? his other six disposals were by hand.

Staker told afl.com.au after the match that just running out onto Subiaco Oval was fantastic, let alone a goal with his first kick.

?It?s sort of a dream come true, obviously, and good fun,? he said.

?It?s funny how the story goes like that, but I think I was lucky, I guess.?

Anyone who has seen Staker playing for WAFL side East Fremantle in recent weeks would be quick to dispute the claims of luck, with the 19-year-old starring for the Sharks at centre-half-forward.

Before being taken by West Coast in last year?s draft at number 37, the 193cm key-position-prospect had gained a two-year scholarship with the ACT Rams, so moving to Perth wasn?t his first move away from home.

West Coast fans won?t be surprised by the emergence of Staker, or his ability to find his way at the top level, as coach John Worsfold has been saying good things about him since the pre-season.

Even so, Staker said the pace of a ?real? AFL game came as something of a shock.

?It did, a lot ? coming from the WAFL into this is a whole lot different.

?Like everyone says, you get the ball and give it off straight away, and that?s what it?s like.

?I got to play the whole of the second quarter, and I felt a bit more comfortable, so in the last quarter when I came on it felt OK.?

On the subject of players scoring with their first kicks I have a
vague memory of a Geelong ?? debutante scoring 2 or 3 on as many kicks . may even have been against us ???

Can anyone help supply the missing details

I read that Nixon hails from close to the Victorian
border so I doubt he would call Sydney home. As for the Davis selection I guess he agreed to go to them under father/s
on so they might have expected him to stay, this is apparently swaying Darcy to stay with the Dogs. Incidentally I read where Davis's father would definitely have preferred he stay a Pie.
