With the AFL talking about 'banking' MCG Finals for week 2, it got me thinking that winning a game in week 1 of the finals could mean we miss out on a home final.
Say we finish 4th after 22 rounds, so play our qualifying final away. Teams 2 and 3 are also non-Victorian teams. We win our qualifying final meaning we do not play in week 2 which is where we would have a home final if the AFL does 'bank' the games that weekend. With teams 2 and 3 both being non-Victorian, then regardless of who wins that game in Week 1, the winner would have a home preliminary final and the loser a home semi-final. With us being the lower ranked of the 2 winning qualifying finalists, we would have to play our 'home' preliminary final at the MCG.
Maybe not a bad thing considering how great our support is in Melbourne, but as a Sydneysider, I would be extremely disappointed at not being able to cheer on our boys at home.
This of course all depends on a bunch of assumptions, but is a definite possibility.
