    Charlie,
you started the thread off as if it was an impartial question but obviously you have strong emotinal veiws on this and all subjects "south Melbourne" so my feeling is that this is more a petition than a suryey.

for mine no, once a year maximum.
Too much identification with the past is not good for the Sydney Swans. especially with such an underperforming team as south melbourne.

Using that logic, Australia shouldn?t identify with Anzac Day! After all we were defeated at Gallipoli and we only want to identify with winners, right?

BTW South Melbourne and Sydney are the SAME football club.

Australia doesn't have the same problems of underperforming that the South Melbourne Swans had.
I'm not saying that we should not remeber our heritage, but I think we are better off underplaying it.

I prefer the modern jumper. Too much white in the original.

Can't say I'm a big fan of the stripey socks either.

            Once a year is enough.

yes. I would love to see a modern version of the South guernsey as our away strip. Also, as someone else mentioned, I believe SMFC or SMFC 1877 should be on the back of all guernseys!

                Once a year for me.....

And while they're at it, they should try to make it a 'blockbuster' heratige game with the same opposition every year, played in Melbourne.

Let's cut in on a few of the blockbusters taht the Eddies and Bombers enjoy so much....

I think our special occasion game could actually be the ANZAC day clash with Melbourne. We already wear the socks for these games. It is special and a part of our heritage as a club.

We need to forge ahead and create history in Sydney, but always remember where we came from. We had a club steeped in tradition, who for survival moved away from their roots, this should always be embraced and not forgotten. They've given us so much.

Except that the ones who really want the jumper worn are from Melbourne, and it represents the Melb history etc, so it makes sense to wear it down here.

And let's get another blockbuster event happening.

                    We need the money :lol

Yeah but imagine if we used to be the Boozers, wouldn't you want to get away from that kind of history ?
IE: heaps of stand out players but hardley any success ??
Well gues what that is our history and I want it changed and I think that holding to old traditions makes that hard .
I don't want the south sydney swans to do well in Sydney. I want the city of Sydney to have a champion AFL football team.

footyhead, if you want to forget the underperforming "South Melbourne" part of our history, I suppose you wouldn't mind if we did the same with our "Sydney" history, after all the late 80's and early 90's aren't anything to write home about

And while we are at it I suppose you don't mind the club having no premiership wins if you think underplaying our history as South is a good thing, after all we have won nothing as the "Sydney Swans"

Forget the whole split city thing for a minute we are the same club and no matter what what we did in 1967 has the same meaning to what we did in 1997.
                        Once was, now elsewhere

ALL games in Melbourne for mine, it could bring back even more of the old South supporters, which would be ideal for our supporter base down here.

Agreed, we should be proud of the south heritage even though as far as premierships go it doesn't make good reading. It should be remembered some of the game's best players have worn the red and white.

On that note, is anyone aware of Roosey inviting a former great like Bob Skilton to address the team before the Hawthorn game?? Anything to add to the team of the century occassion would be good, especially if it boosts the Swans' on-field performance (look at what happened to St Kilda against West Coast).

I think it should be worn for all games away in Melbourne.

If it entices another 1,000 old South Melbourne supporters who still follow the red and whites into actually attending the games and buying a membership then that could only benefit the club in the future.

1,000 members at $90 is another $90,000 to the bottom line which is a good result for the club.

Not the Grand final though but certainly away games whether h&a or finals (bloody MCG rule). If we have to play a home final at the G we MUST INSIST on home strip as a matter of principle.

I think it's great that we have such good support throughout the country and especialy in Melbourne and that is mostly due to traditional South supporters.

IMHO the "Opera House" jumper (aprt from looking god) was necessary to establish a "Sydney" identity but as we are now firmly established (in the sense that almost every one in this city, whether they follow AFL or not, regards the Swans as "their" team) tyhen it is time to further re-connect with the roots of the club and wearing this strip in Melbourne is a further step in that direction.

None of this is original argument though. I and others have argued that the traditional "white with red V" jumper should be our away strip for some years. But this Hertage week-end provides a further opportunity to push the argument.
