    Swans who ruffle feathers

    Swans who ruffle feathers
    06 August 2003 Herald Sun
    By JOHN THIRSK

JARED Crouch has laid 65 tackles this season, while Brett Kirk has an even more impressive 101 bone-crunchers.

They are the unsung heroes of Sydney's remarkable rise up the ladder this season.

And at the SCG on Saturday night, the pair will be at it again, hoping to do a number on Hawthorn's two blond playmakers, Shane Crawford and Sam Mitchell, in a game the Swans must win to keep their top-four hopes alive.

Crouch and Kirk have met a who's who of the AFL this season and come up trumps.

Crouch has been matched up against Jeff Farmer, Stephen Milne, Ashley Sampi, Gary Ablett Jr and Andrew McLeod.

Kirk, regarded as a Brownlow Medal "sleeper" and possible All-Australian, has taken on Ben Cousins, Nathan Buckley, Peter Bell, Mark Ricciuto and Simon Black with distinction.

"My role as a tagger has changed a bit," Crouch said yesterday.

"I'm more of a defensive type player whose job is to stop my opponent from getting a kick and scoring goals.

"Brett is a defensive midfielder who has shut down some of the best in the competition.

"He has had a fantastic season and his discipline is one for the books in the way he can concentrate for the full four quarters and not give his opponent an inch to move all day."

Crouch said that Adelaide's dual premiership player McLeod, whom he came up against on Sunday, was the best he has had to play on.

"You can be on top of McLeod for three quarters and suddenly he can turn a match on its ear, kicking three goals and getting six kicks in as many minutes," he said.

"McLeod has explosive pace from a standing start, possesses great skills and has the ability to change gear whenever he wants.

"You've got to restrict McLeod with negating tactics by keeping his efficiency rate down and not allowing him to operate inside his own attacking 50m area.

"The idea is to put him under pressure from getting kicks rather than letting him run free."

Kirk's 101 tackles is the highest in the competition, ahead of Docker Troy Cook (92), Tiger Mark Coughlan (89) and Saint Lenny Hayes (88).

"We have worked hard as a unit on our tackling and learnt from the rugby league and union players," Crouch said.

Under the brownlow system we have, Kirk will NEVER winn a Brownlow.

The umpires will give votes to other players than taggers.
Right or wrong, that's th way it is.

In fact, I would be surprised if Kirk was in the top 5 of out B & F at the moment.

Perhaps next year now that he is getting a bit of publicity....

I agree that he will not do well in the Brownlow - in fact I'd be surprised if he polled any votes.

However, I reckon he could be a shot at winning our B&F. I'm picking it's between him and J Bolton actually, with Cressa and Micky outsiders, but a bit behind because of less games played.

You don't rate Adam Goodes in our top 4?

Yep - I knew there was someone else I was trying to remember. I think he'll be in the top 5 somewhere, although he's dropped back a bit from the heights he achieved earlier in the year.

Yep, but he's out of it now.

How very true. Not just taggers though, how many fullbacks have won the Brownlow? Have there been any? How many defensive players of any kind? Even Paul Roos garnered very few Brownlow votes.

But don't blame the umpires. Most footy scribes vote the same way. It's only coaching staff (plus Sydney fans) that fully appreciate the value of a definesive player

Tell me where I can get odds on Kirk "not" getting a vote.

Is there a bookie who will take me on?

Ok - know the Brownlow has a long history but ... I dont like umpires voting for best and fairest . The umpire has enough to do worrying about doing his own job without judging best and fairest

No wonder players who do the most showy things get votes and
people like Roos and Kirk miss out

Years ago rugby league's best and fairest (Rothmans medal) was voted by refs ; but about 20 ?? years ago that was replaced by the Dally M's and these are not voted by refs

To me thats the better way to do it

Libba was not a 'tagger' when he won the brownlow. He was just a tiny weeny little midfielder who had a bloody good season. It was only later on, in the twilight of his career, that Plough Wallace turned him in to a dirty, spite filled 'tagger' to win games. It worked, but at what cost for Libba? Everybody remembers him for this, as you have just demonstrated, and not the good footy he played early on in his career.
                        Go you mighty BLOODBOYS!

I still reckon Goodes would be favourite, though maybe not the monty he seemed to be a few weeks ago. He's still been an incredibly important player during the periods we have been dominating games - such as that final quarter against Freo and the second half against Adelaide. And if we are going anywhere in the finals this year we'll need him to put in some more dominant performances.

Kirk will be right up there in the B&F - the job he does each week is one that the coaches love and they're the ones voting for the B&F. Jude I agree will also be in with a shot and I wouldn't be surprised to see Leapin' Leo finish with a top 5 slot. Micky O' will be hurt by missing so many games, and that will also hurt Cressa as well, though I daresay he'll still be top 5. Could be one of the closest finishes to the B&F for years, in fact, with Hall and Willo potentially knocking on the door of the top 5 as well, though I doubt either of them will come close to winning it.

As far as the Brownlow is concerned, no way known Kirk will win but I wouldn't be surprised if he polls the odd vote or two. He hasn't just been tagging - he's been contributing in a positive way as well - and all the publicity he's been getting in recent weeks must have alerted the umps' attention to his roles. Could possibly score a vote or two in the Freo game.

I think anybody is in the running from any position but you have to get enough of the nut and do enough special things on the ground consistently.

Barry Hall (when not the umps fav man) last year polled votes, imagine if Baz was an angel and they started to actually like him?
