I'm afraid our record in the finals is not very good and based on the past experiences they'll be probably out in the first week of the finals (assuming they won't get to teh top 4) anyway, unless they suprise again as they did earlier this season.
My confidence at the moment is not very high, but hey, we will still remember some of the nice performances our boys delivered earlier this season.

we were going to the after match and then just couldn't be bothered, just felt really down. On the way home I thought that's it for this year, this morning still feeling a little down, but I think we're still there.

We did play too ordinary last night, but perhaps there was too much hype leading up to the game (heitage & TOC). Although having said that to win the flag I guess they have have to endure the hype of grand final week.

I still believe we can do it and finish top 4.

In case there is any confusion, I was being totally sarcastic in my post.

We are still a huge player in the finals.

We should never write ourselves off.....

The fact that we played crapola in front of the legends hurt me more than the timing of the loss.

What was suppose to be a night of celebration turned to a night of farce.

You would think with Bob Skilton in the rooms before the game and other legends the boys would be inspired. Instead they were hopeless.

Didnt man up and just let the hawks run free in the 2nd qrt.

          Pathetic.

I think we've had an ordinary record in "big games" of late anyway.especially coming up against an under-rated opponent. That's what always hurts us, we will be competitive against the top teams, and really struggle against the teams we're expected to beat.

We got carved up in the middle, and that really put pressure on our backs and forwards. Fumbling the ball all the time didn't help - a lot of Hawthorn's disposals were clean and precise, we kept stuffing around with it and bombing it long to our forwards who didn't stand a chance.

Disappointing, to say the least. Are we still in with a chance in the finals? Yes, but it gets very hard from here. IMHO we can still finish top 4, but we'll have to win 2, possibly even 3 games out of the 3 left. Then who knows. Is 3 games enough to build up momentum for the finals? I think it might be, particularly as it's against relatively strong opposition (Melbourne aside). Win them all, and we're hot again. Limp into the finals, and we'll be spanked early (though if we finish 5th, we might be a chance to survive into week 2).

177th Senior AFL Match - Round 4, 2009 - Sydney vs Carlton, SCG. This is obviously out of date. I suppose I'll update it once I could be bothered sitting down with the fixture and working it out....

Indeed we played like the great majority of Sydney/South Melbourne team of the last 100 years- inept, unconfident, mediocre, bloody ordinary.

In 100 years little has changed.

The looks on some of the past players after the match were of "Hear we go again".

I hope those bastards in the black St Kilda shorts last night feel satisfied with themselves now.

The season's not over. But personally, I'd be devastated if we fail to get a home final. I was looking forward to a big Syd crowd to really set up the next couple of years!

Why is almost everyone so incredibly down about this? sure, we sucked, but name me a team that hasn't sucked at least once this year! I'm with Diego and JF tho, playing like that in front of THE biggest names in the club for the last 100 years is the worst bit about it.

Also, I'm slightly confused as to why people are so determined for us to have a top 4 finish. As it stands, we're 5th and that guarantees us a home final in the first week of finals regardless, whereas we finish third or fourth and it's off to probably adelaide for us, where we can't seem to win this year. Losing over there would give us a second match and iirc a home final then, but if we were to get beaten in week one, what would that do to us for the next week? Look what a close loss on that ground left us with this week, and even after the Port match we were pretty lucky. As far as I'm concerned the team should make the best of whatever they've got come september, but I'd prefer a home final in week one to a trip to adelaide that week hands down.

Bam Bam, we went to the AM, but left before the players got there ... I was too down after a big week. Anyone know which players came up and what was said?

The only positive I heard was that we were repeating the early rounds of the competition, so if you believe in whatever it is, we'll win the next three ....

At least the crapola performance was in the main home and away rounds not in the finals. Remeber 1997 or was it 1998 the woeful performance in an elimination game againt the Bulldogs

Argh...1997. After the prev year the biggest let down thus far. Mickey looked lost in the 1st qrt when the dogs kicked like 50 goals.

Well it was around 8 or 9 but it seemed like an avalanche of goals at the time.

Remember that day. The Swans hardly broke the banner. I knew they'd get pumped, but was berated by the locals for "lacking spirit..."

Micky most definitely is not 100% fit now. He had some sort of strapping on his knee and was running very gingerly.

Does anyone have any more info on things with him?

10 goals to 1 in the first quarter - nightmare. My first ever visit to Melbourne and the MCG, and I had to put up with that!!

North rolled Geelong the next day (7th playing 2nd) so we were knocked out. v. disappointing.

Lets put that horrible day to rest. Never forget my reaction.

My partner of the time was pleading for me to calm down and kept telling me "its only a football game".

But it was more than that..
