Pies back down on Sydney home game

Obviously this is a very good decision for Swans fans based in Melbourne but it sure puts egg on the face of Eddie . We probably all remember the hype at the time that Collingwood were going to turn the Western suburbs into a new AFL and Magpie heartland. Reality bites!!!

Pies back down on 'home' game

Collingwood has retreated from its plan to play a home game in Sydney next year and will now play only once as the away team at Telstra Stadium.

The Magpies are now set to play in Sydney, as the away team, on the bye weekend next year - meaning Sydney-Collingwood would be the only AFL game on that weekend.

The Magpies had received backing from the AFL to play a home game at Telstra Stadium in Homebush, provided they still had their customary 18 games in Melbourne and members were compensated with home game privileges at an "away" match.

But, because of the complexities of the AFL draw, Collingwood has been told that it cannot play the Swans at the bye weekend - which was after round 12 this year - and play in Sydney a second time.

Thus, the Magpies were faced with a choice between playing a novel Sydney blockbuster on the so-called bye weekend, or playing the Swans twice in Sydney, early and late in the season.

Collingwood chief executive Greg Swann said the club could play twice at Telstra Stadium only if it played once about Easter and then later in the season, round 18 or 19.

He said Collingwood preferred to play on the bye weekend, which would heighten interest in the game from a marketing viewpoint, since it would be the only game in the country that weekend.

The club had hoped to play twice and play one of those games, preferably the "home" game, on the bye weekend. "We can't do it," Swann said. "It's logistically impossible.

"We just said we'd prefer to play the bye game," Swann said. As the only game in Australia that weekend, Sydney-Collingwood would have great promotional potential.

Sydney chairman Richard Colless said while he had not formally been told by the AFL that the Collingwood home game was off the agenda, he understood that the bye weekend arrangement was likely. He said the club understood that a Collingwood home game in Sydney would not be easy to organise.

Colless said the Western Bulldogs, who have played a home game at the SCG in recent years, were keen to continue that schedule, "almost in perpetuity".

One of the issues for Sydney is its desire to keep playing its share of away games in Melbourne, where it has a relatively large supporter base. "We want to increase the number of games we play in Melbourne, not decrease them," said Colless.

The Swans are expecting their largest Sydney crowd to the blockbuster against Collingwood on the evening of Saturday week, although Colless said each club's results at the weekend would probably shape the level of interest in the game.

"I think anything over 50,000 will be really good. Anything approaching 60,000 will be stunningly good."

Top news the less of dear Eddie the better.
Glad he isn't coming to Sydney more than he has to. One game - an away game for them really top news.

    All mouth he is.
    Love those Swans

This has completely backfired on Eddie.

Now the Swans get the home game from the only game on the bye weekend. Thus we get all the revenue from Eddie's idea.

        Thanks mate.

Thank god, this didn't go though, not only would us Swans fans in Melbourne worn the brunt on it, but it would of given Collingwood a totally unfair draw.

WOW!!! Looks like I owe SSI an appology.

They are making inroads into changing things up there already!!!!

That was one of thier goals I believe.....

Now people may say that the Swans have always been comitted to as many games in Melb as possible, some may even be able to find lots of public quotes to that effect, but we all know this is the work of SSI

Give them a bit of time and they will be celebrating another big victory, much like the way they single handedly had Roos made coach.

Where the hell are they anyway?

It's really hard to bag them when they aren't saying or trying to do anything

If Collingwood were REALLY keen on playing a "home" game in Sydney, why won't they consider playing someone ELSE (ie. not the Swans)

The pies won't play anyone else in Sydney now because that means an extra trip away from their beloved Melbourne - remember they don't travel to WA either.
How is is rigged for them?????

I like the idea of us and Collingwood on the bye weekend, should be good.

More games in Melbourne is what I'd like to see.

Does the tenor of this article annoy anyone other than me? The implication is that its totally the Pies decision, and that the AFL would have gone along with whatever they wanted. Sure, every club is entitled to put in its fixture wishlist but surely it's up to the AFL to balance every teams requirements and desires, not just pander to the Colliwooobles and then fit in everyone else around them?

Whatever happened to Collingwood's commitment being not just a token effort but a genuine desire to grow the game in western Sydney? The parallels to the Kangaroos pulling out before Sydney's home game against them in 2000 is uncanny.
Boo a Roo will be a pleasant little picnic compared to Saturday week at Homebush. I don't think there'll be any trouble getting the crowd fired up for this one.

I like the idea of a game on the "bye" weekend too. A no-footy weekend in the middle of the seaon is a real letdown.

This way the players still get a break but for us footy fans we dont have to have a weekend with no footy whatsoever
