The Sydney Swans have upset the Brisbane Lions, snatched a top-four spot and seriously jeopardised the reigning premiers? September chances after scoring a thrilling 14-point win at the Gabba on Sunday.
Powerful forward Barry Hall was the match-winner for the visiting side after kicking five goals, in what was a crucial match for both clubs, which were placed fourth and sixth before the round 20 match.
Sydney joins Adelaide and Collingwood on 52 premiership points and sits in fourth position on the table, while the Lions slip to fifth with 50 after the 14.6 (90) to 10.16 (76) defeat.
The Swans worked to an 11-point lead at the last change after kicking six unanswered goals against the Brisbane side that had been dominant in the first half. The lead changed throughout a memorable last term, but Hall gave his side a seven point buffer when he kicked his fifth major with less than two minutes remaining.
Paul Williams kicked the sealer in his 250th match, which saw the Swans beat Brisbane for the second time this season.
In an apparent masterstroke by Lions coach Leigh Matthews, regular defender Chris Johnson was moved into the forward line in the last quarter and kicked two quick goals to wrestle back a three-point lead for his side midway through the final term.
Significantly, the move of Johnson took the damaging Jude Bolton out of the midfield, albeit momentarily. But having got their running game going, the Swans remained composed and were able to feed to ball to Hall, whose accuracy ultimately steered his side to victory.
At the other end, Jonathan Brown was devastating early ? kicking three goals in the opening term for the second successive week ? but did not manage another major after Craig Bolton was moved on to him.
Jason Saddington was Brown?s first opponent and was given an early workout ? the Lion was paid a free kick forty metres from goal in the opening minutes of the match, and granted a set shot after taking a dubious mark 50 metres out.
Brisbane took a nine-point lead into the major break and when Clark Keating kicked the first two goals of the third term to restore a 21-point buffer, it looked ominous for the travellers.
But Michael O?Loughlin sparked his side, with his first goal coming early in the third term. Brett Kirk closed the margin to nine points when he converted on the run, before Ryan O?Keefe, O?Loughlin, Hall and Cresswell goaled in succession.
The Swans snatched the lead with four minutes remaining in the term when O?Loughlin took a bounce before directing a banana kick through the big sticks. Cresswell?s major gave his team an 11 point lead, and was a result of a soaring mark from Adam Goodes.
Having been slaughtered at the centre bounces and clearances for the first half, a persistent Sydney got its running game going, and its limited band of talls were pivotal.
Brisbane?s Michael Voss was best on ground, accumulating in excess of 30 possessions, but the work of Jared Crouch, Williams, Bolton and Kirk ultimately curbed the Lions? decorated midfield.
BRISBANE LIONS: 4.3, 6.8, 8.12, 10.16 (76)

GOALS: Brisbane: Brown 3, Keating, Johnson 2, Akermanis, Charman, Black.
