    Marketing...

Do the Swans market themselves enough?

Do we get out there and try to sell to the public "The Sydney Swans Product"

If not, which I think is the case, then why not! Why aren't we making big television commercials etc? I swear in the past that we had a lot more of a marketing aspect than we do now.

Now we are really quiet, hardly anyone hears about us.

WHY? How do we expect to succeed in the Sydney Market, if nobody knows we are here?

We need to be selling the Swans as a product!

    Thoughts?

I am sure the club has an annual marketing budget and this year it has been cut by at 70% to cut cost.

Marketing a product is rather expensive and the club really has never got it right in the past.

I don't know maybe there will be more money in the budget next year? Maybe they need to dump the current agency they have and paick up a new Mraketing person.

The swans are marketing themselves at the moment with all the hype about the Collingwood clash. Their success has also been another factor with alot of media publicity.

Most of their ads on television are for the stations but i think they do make people pay attention to the swans even if the ads are just trying to sell the timeslot for that station

The more successful the swans are they will sell themselves, and they are doing a pretty good job at the moment for example the crowd figures.

Obviously their main competition is other football codes and it is hard to direct people away and convert them but there is nothing better to watch then the swans winning at a packed SCG. It's only a matter of getting people to the game to enjoy this. Word of mouth works wonders and I think the swans have done alot without the need for huge marketing expenses. Haven't the member numbers increased??

AFL made a good point in one of their statements saying that they don't market teh Swans and AFL in Sydney properly, because they were using the same approach to marketing as here in Melbourne. They promised to change that next year, by using different approaches to advertising, although they didn't say what would that look like. I would assume that they won't leave it to the TV stations to do all the advertising, but be perhaps more direct in lifting the profiles of the club and blockbuster matches they'll probably schedule for next year in Sydney.

Ultimately though as this year has shown, the best marketing tool of all is a successful team.

This week we have been at the top of practically every sports update. League and union have bearly had a look in!

Not bad considering we are still 2 weeks away from the actual finals.

Hopefully this will bring more sponsors on board for next year which in turn will provide more funds for further promotion etc.

Couldn't agree more. Hard to promote a middle/lower end of the table team.

Which hypothetically could be a reason for them cutting back this year (if indeed they have) given we were never meant to be particularly successful. Maybe the theory was to be low key in the market this year, and then turn it up over the next couple as Roos builds the team towards real on-field success.

The fact that the crowds have gradually increased demonstrates that the real spearheads of the marketing department are the 22 guys who take the field each week.
