    Crime surge in Sydney

AAP - Sydney retailers have reported a sudden surge in the rate of shoplifting this weekend. The NSW Police and State Chamber of Commerce are at a loss to explain why the retail industry was fleeced of thousands of dollars worth of goods, on an apparently normal winter Saturday. The epicentre of the crime wave was around the suburb of Homebush, in Sydney's west.

Amongst the hardest hit was the Lowes chain, with general manager Chee Pen Nasti telling reporters that singlets, trackpants and moccasins were among the most popular items disappearing off shelves.

"The perpetrators that we've caught on cameras have generally been wearing black and white clothing, which was uniformly old, dirty and badly tattered. One was wearing a gold jacket, and when we attempted to approach him, he shuffled away screaming incoherently. I asked the police whether there had been a mass breakout at Long Bay Jail, which they confirmed was not the case. I just don't understand it."

Most of the offenders have apparently succeeded in escaping justice, however one perpetrator will most likely be tracked down after dropping their dentures in an escape. The same thief was later filmed at a BP service station stealing a meat pie, but he probably won't be able to eat it.
