AFL: Brodie reported for striking Willo

Brodie Holland, Collingwood, reported on video evidence by umpire Mathew James for striking Paul Williams, Sydney, during the first quarter of the Round 21 match between Collingwood and Sydney at Telstra Stadium on Saturday August 23, 2003.

The AFL also wishes to advise that a number of incidents from the weekend's matches have been reviewed by umpires this afternoon.

Umpire Michael Vozzo viewed footage of an incident from Saturday night's match between Collingwood and Sydney at Telstra Stadium where Brodie Holland made contact with Paul Williams. It was umpire Vozzo's view that contact was made with Holland's thighs, and not his knees, and that the resultant 50 metre penalty paid on the night was sufficient for the incident.

Sorry didn't realise you had a thread already open I'll post it in here instead:

This didn't surprise me at all.

It wouldn't also surprise me if Ben Cousins might be charged with striking as well - he definitely connected with one of the Demons last night - but knowing him he'll get off scott free again *sigh*

    Holland Charged with Striking Williams
    August 25, 2003

COLLINGWOOD midfielder Brodie Holland will front the AFL Tribunal tomorrow night after he was charged with striking Sydney's Paul Williams on a video charge.

Holland was reported by umpire Mathew James for striking Williams in Saturday night's game at Telstra Stadium.

Holland will face the tribunal with Fremantle forward Paul Medhurst, who was reported for kicking Essendon's Danny Jacobs at Telstra Dome on Saturday.

Medhurst has been a key player all year for the Dockers, who are preparing for their first-ever finals series, and leads the club's goalkicking with 45.

Collingwood will sweat on Holland's charge ahead of Friday night's blockbuster against Essendon, as the tagger is one of the most improved players at the club.

Holland tagged former Magpie Williams all night and it was clear there was some angst between the pair.

Williams goaled from a 50-metre penalty after Holland fell on the Swan as he lay on the ground, but umpire Michael Vozzo today said Holland had made contact with Williams with his thighs and not his knees.

Two incidents from yesterday's game between West Coast and Melbourne will also require no more action following the video review.

Demon Clint Bizzell made contact with field umpire Darren Morris, but reviewers ruled the contact was caused by an accidental bump on Bizzell by Eagle Glen Jakovich.

A clash that left Melbourne's Ryan Ferguson bloodied will also require no further scrutiny.

The video review of the weekend's matches is continuing.

    Holland faces striking charge

Collingwood could be without its number one tagger Brodie Holland for Friday night?s blockbuster against Essendon at the MCG and for the start of the AFL finals series after he was booked on video evidence on Monday for striking Sydney veteran Paul Williams.

Holland will face the AFL Tribunal on Tuesday night and faces a nervous wait as video footage of the incident does not look good for the much-improved Magpie star.

A replay of the incident on Monday showed Holland appearing to punch Williams to the face behind play with the Swans star ending up on the ground as a result.

Such an act usually brings a suspension of at least two weeks at the tribunal meaning Holland is now in serious danger of missing the start of the finals series.

That would be a huge blow to the Magpies as Holland, who began his career as a specialist forward pocket, has emerged as one of the AFL?s best taggers this season.

Holland will be joined at the tribunal on Tuesday night by Fremantle goalsneak Paul Medhurst, who was reported on the serious charge of kicking during Saturday?s loss to Essendon at Telstra Dome.

And like Collingwood, the Dockers will be sweating on the result of that hearing as they prepare for not only Saturday night?s huge local derby against West Coast but for their first ever finals appearance in a fortnight.

However while Holland will have to answer a striking charge on Tuesday night, he was cleared of any wrongdoing for his part in another incident with Williams during the Pies? thrilling win over Sydney at Telstra Stadium on Saturday night.

Field umpire Michael Vozzo viewed footage of an incident where Holland made contact with Williams but decided contact was made by Holland?s thighs, as he slid into Williams, rather than his knees and did not constitute a report.

Holland gave away a 50-metre penalty as a result of the incident for unnecessary contact on Williams after he had taken possession of the ball.
Meanwhile Melbourne defender Clint Bizzell was cleared of making contact with an umpire during the Demons? loss to West Coast at Subiaco on Sunday.

The umpire concerned was field umpire Darren Morris, who ruled the contact by Bizzell was unavoidable after the Melbourne defender had himself been accidentally bumped into Morris by Eagles? veteran Glen Jakovich.

Totally unprovoked, off the ball, very nasty.

And Willo didn't bother to kick up a fuss. I admire the man. God knows how much he gets that treatment without the scragging little bastards getting caught, but he was focused enough to just get on with the game.

Speaking of taggers, how do we think Captain went against Bucks or has that already been discussed?

if it's possible I think James would be a favourite of a bad bunch for me Vozzo's call doesn't surprise, always calls against us.

I think Kirky frustrated the hell out of Buckethead early.

Should go for at least 2 , hopefully more, but i hope he gets back to finals to enjoy collingwood go straight out of the finals - that is punishment enough!

After seeing the cheap shot again along with the 50 metre penalty 2 mins later for the so called thighs coming in late, it makes perfect sense why Willo did the death stare at Holland afterwards - it was more a death stare/smirk

That being said I managed to salvage the last min of the game *ugh* well the part where Buckley was on stage and noone was listening to him and they showed the Swans, the look on Willo's face there *sigh* I feel like screencapping it just to show the disappointment on the Swans faces

ETA: after reading the Daily Telegraph article on the striking today - it makes sense why Willo was benched at the end of the second quarter - apparently the strike wasn't the first one that Willo had rec'd by Holland on the night - he had rec'd one earlier on as well.

I hadn't seen the footage until watching on the couch last night.

                    What a dirty little B@#$tad.

Good on Willo for the way he handled it. Cream always rises to the top.

What is more to the point, is how at least 1 of 3 field umpires, 1 of 2 boundary umpires and at least one goal umpire FAILED to see it!!!
A king hit like that is premeditated and although iMHO the damage was nowhere near as serious as the Picioane incident, the INTENT was....

Was interesting that it was mentioned by one of the 'On the Couch' panellists (I forget which one) as worse than the Jess Sinclair on Lance Picioane one. I think 5 weeks would go down nicely....

is it coincidental that it was Willo on both occasions, that the above mentioned offences took place, or just a mark of a hack trying to contain a great player?

another spooky coincidence, both were at SA

wasn't the bench in your dug out named after Libba Swan_Song?
