    Jade Rawlings

Forget Hay or Jacobs . Rawlings is THE player that I would love to see in the Red and White . He can play forward or back with equal ability and is a terrific mark and is just the player we need .Unfortunately , the Cats have made him their no 1 priority and he will be in great demand by other clubs.

Hawks ask players for pay trim
    September 3, 2003

HAWTHORN has asked senior players to accept a salary trim or risk the team being broken up due to payment pressure.

Senior players were called to the club on Tuesday and told there must be some salary sacrifice if the current playing group was to stay together, and remaining players were informed today.

Top-paid players at clubs including Brisbane and Carlton last year elected to moderate their pay demands in the interests of team solidarity, but it was a first for Hawthorn.

"We met with the playing group and told them where we are with the salary cap and have issues to work through," Hawthorn football manager John Hook told AAP.

"If they want to maintain must of the list together, we have to make some adjustments.

"The bottom line is to balance the salary cap....and our aim is to keep the players we want to keep.

"This in one part of fixing the problem, we wouldn't ask every players at the club to do it."peIn the recent past, clubs had been able to satisfy payment demands through burgeoning increases in the salary cap, but with an increase of just three per cent in the first year of the new agreement, such largesse had now been abandoned in the interests of fiscal austerity.

"If the players had just said they wanted three per cent (increase), we would accept that but that is not the case," Hook said.

That spelt bad news for players negotiating new contracts, which at Hawthorn included star players Jade Rawlings and Angelo Lekkas.

Salary cap pressure can also prompt some big name trades in mid-October's trade period, with Essendon last year forced to trade premiership trio Blake Caracella, Chris Heffernan and Justin Blumfield to stay within the cap, while Melbourne had to trade Brownlow Medallist Shane Woewodin.

Rawlings will be 26 next month. At the peak of his career and certainly not too old. I agree that the price would be high but we have plenty of scope in our salary cap to fit in Rawlings. IMO he would be a great target .

              i find this article surprising:

Hawks keen for a key defender
              Matt Burgan
              afl.com.au
              5:14:25 PM Thu 28 August, 2003

Hawthorn coach Peter Schwab says the club will be in the market for a ?quality key defender?, but admits that obtaining a tall backman will be a difficult task for the Hawks at the end of the season.

Schwab said the club was still in the market for the best possible player, but added that a key tall was an area the Hawks would target.

?We?d love another quality key defender, but they?re so hard to find. That would be ideal for us. If we can?t find that, we?ll just try and find another good quality player from somewhere. But it?s difficult,? Schwab said.

However, Schwab was realistic enough to know that the club?s salary cap constraints would also be an issue at the end of the season, as it shapes its list for 2004.

?We want to keep everyone. If we?re going to go forward, we can?t afford to lose good players,? Schwab said before Hawthorn training on Thursday.

?We need to add to the list and not try and subtract from it, so that?s going to be the challenge and I only talk from a coaching point of view. We all know there are salary cap issues in the game. It?s a real fine balance.

?We?re going to be talking in the next month about all the other stuff that none of us here really like, because it?s people?s futures, but that?s reality.?

Schwab admitted that Jade Rawlings? market value had risen after his impressive season, but was hopeful of retaining him at Glenferrie for next season, while he indicated that veteran Daniel Harford would remain at the Hawks for 2004.

?It was really pleasing to get him playing back in the seniors. And he?s played well. I thought he played a good game. He?s still under contract, so that?s the way it is,? Schwab said of Harford.

Meanwhile, Schwab said to achieve more wins than losses in a season was still a ?reasonably good season? although he admitted that it was ?disappointing? not to be in the final eight.

Schwab was leaning towards Port Adelaide as the team to beat for 2003.

?I?ve always been an advocate (for the premiership to come from) the top four,? Schwab said.

?The premiership will usually come from there, so therefore I think my feeling is Port Adelaide, Collingwood or one of the other two, who finishes in the top four. I don?t know who it will be at the end of the home and away season.

?Sooner or later I think Port Adelaide is going to just get their act together and play really good finals footy and I think they?ll be really hard to beat.?

Two points about Hawthorn which I find interesting considering the comments in those articles:

                1. How many more talls does Hawthorn need? They have probably the tallest side in the comp. Everitt, Holland, Barker, Thompson, Hay, Dixon, and thats just a start. The reason they are an average side is because they have far too many talls (read show ponies). They were only competitive this year due to Rawlings great form and Mitchell's emergence.

                2. Why would these guys really want to take pay cuts just to stay with the Hawks. I can understand guys at Brisbane last year doing it so that they could stay with a winning team, but Hawthorn? Geez, there must really be something about playing in poo brown that I just dont understand.

Oh yeah, 1 more thing. With the list they have, maybe Hawthorn should be in the market for a new coach instead of a new tall defender!

then there's this issue, i think they may need to offload a few:

                  Salary cap pressure for Hawks
                  11:47:56 AM Thu 4 September, 2003
                  afl.com.au
Salary cap pressures have prompted the Hawks to ask several players to agree to take pay cuts, or at least to restructure their contracts in a bid to keep the club?s list relatively intact in the short to medium term.

The club?s position has been spelled out to players and staff in a series of briefings held over the past few days.

Hawthorn chief executive Steve Leighton said that he hopes to be able to balance the books within the next three or four weeks.

?We have spoken to some players about their ability to take some form of reduction and-or a change in the structure of their contract,? Leighton told Sport927.

?We will face pressure with our players and there may be two or three players that we will need to trade if we don?t create scope within the salary cap.?

Leighton stressed that all current contracts would be honoured.

"It doesn?t matter whether it?s staff, players, coaches, whatever. That?s an ethic that the Hawthorn Football Club has stood behind,? he said.

?The issue for us is that we would like to get the maximum out of our club and our playing list.?

?To be able to do that, we need some scope in terms of our salary cap. It doesn?t mean that there?s a reduction in the salary cap, it may mean that the contracts need to take a different form.?

                    1. True, but if you look at the ages, and I don't have them in front of me, you'll see quite a number of them will be pushing 30 and even beyond. I don't think they have many young talls coming through.

                    2. To look pretty

I'm pretty surprised Schwab was reappointed. They have underachieved this year, especially given the emergence of young Mitchell.

If Hawthorn trade anyone it will be Holland. We won't be interesed because he is a crock who's best football is behind him.

This is going to be a frantic trading period. Richmond, Carlton, and Melbourne are looking to offload plenty of players. It's impossible to predict who may come our way.

I wouldn't pay a dollar for anyone Carlton try to unload...and I'll bet there'll be a few of them. What I would want if I were coach would be a gun, young in-and-under centreman/onballer (ala Mitchell), a GOOD experienced ruckman (ala Everitt) and a GOOD, solid CHB/FB (ala Michael)
We don't want any 2 or 3 year players...a minimum of 5 years is what we should be looking for, so we should have a cut off of 26 year olds...
I don't think we need to fork out on forwards...but I am torn about the Lucas/Holland/Rawlings type of players whom I believe WOULD fit in well at CHB/CHF for us..
I'd want us, if we recruit any discards, to plan our needs very very carefully and not waste picks/trades on past reputations alone. We must pick wisely to strengthen the team in areas it lacks for 2004 -- ie ruck, kp backman, and in-and-under ball getter to help out Jude, et al.
"Davis...Davis has kicked 2...he snaps from 40...dont tell me, dont tell me, hes kicked a goal....unbelievable stuff from Nick Davis, can you believe this, he's kicked 3 final quarter goals and Swans are within 3 points..."

Good one, he has struggled when injurys have hit the Hawkes when they are near full strength he stars has not lifted the side when needed too and if you have seen him play you would know that, hence he plays as a mister fix it(utillity) than a gun forward.
