    We are Preliminary Finalists

The penny just dropped for me:

Either we beat Port and are in the PF

    Or

    We lose and play the:

Dockers in Sydney who will have no support and will be buggered after the Derby and Bombers game.

Bombers who have their stuffing knocked out of them by the Dockers and who are suffering from the Subiaco curse.

    How could we miss out?

    Sounds good doesn't it.

It might actually be good for the boys to keep playing rather than have the week off (although I guess it would be good to rest niggling injuries). In the bye weekend this year, we came back and lost didn't we? If they keep playing it could keep them more focused - not that they won't be - but a weekend off might be detrimental.

I seem to recall that the year* there was an odd number of teams in the comp, teams coming off the bye would lose more often than not.

I would prefer to get through straight away by beating Port.

Still, a Sydney home semi final on a spring evening is something the game could really use. Imagine the build up to that game, whether its the Dockers or Bombers we should draw 75,000!

I don't buy the argument about having to keep playing. Brisbane have shown two years in a row that a week off is no jinx. I am sure Cressa and Magic - make that most of the guys - would like the extra week to get over niggles and have a real crack at the prelim.

I agree we should win any home match over Freo or the Dons but I am sure both their supporters are thinking the same about our injury ravaged team.

bombers would definitely draw more... i cant imagine freo to be too happy when they are down at 3/4 time... i can see this match becoming VERY physical (freo vs ess)... id like to see m. johnson and medhurst go toe to toe nice for johnson to be suspended for the following week...

Who'd ever have thought that the Swans would ever play Freo at Telstra Stadium and draw 60-70000

If the players need an added reason to beat Port on the weekend, his name starts with an O

Well, if you think about it.. We have finished 4th, yeah? Therefore if we don't at LEAST make the last 4, we would have underachieved for our ladder position. I realise that the ladder is not the be all and end all of determining clubs' strengths, but week 3 is the minimum we should be shooting for here.

We will either play Collingwood @ MCG, or Brisbane @ homebush (assuming the higher teams win) if we make it to week 3, neither will be easy, but this is something I KNOW we can do.

177th Senior AFL Match - Round 4, 2009 - Sydney vs Carlton, SCG. This is obviously out of date. I suppose I'll update it once I could be bothered sitting down with the fixture and working it out....

Brisbane at the G is a real possibility as well - putting aside your assumption. If we lose and Brisbane win this weekend, that's what we'll be shooting for the following week.

The PF possibilies for us are as follows...

                      If we WIN on Sunday.....

.....and Collingwood wins we will play one of Brisbane, Adelaide or WestCoast at SA.

....and Brisbane wins then we will play one of Collingwood, Adelaide or WestCoast at the MCG.

                      Alternatively....

If we lose on Sunday but win the SF against either Freo or Essendon....

....and Collingwood wins then we play Collingwood at the MCG.

....and Brisbane wins then we play Brisbane at the MCG

In summary, if we get to a PF we have a...

50% chance of playing Collingwood at the G,
25% chance of playing a neutral game at the G and
25% chance of a home PF

unless Adelaide or WC can get thru which would change it to 25%, 50%, 25% respectively.

Our best option is if Collingwood gets whatever result we do!

I think you are making it too complicated. If we win, we get a home PF. If we lose, but then win in week 2, we play the winner of Collingwood v Brisbane at the MCG in the PF.

J S, if we win this week, we automatically become the "highest ranked team", hence we will play our PF at home, and Brisbane may have to play a "home" PF at the MCG if they win this week.

No we dont. Rankings are based on ladder position. So we will always be the 2nd prelim which is at the G if the first one isnt by default (ie collingwood winning).
Its quite possible, that we could finish 4th, and not play a single final at home. What an absolute joke!

In fact if we win, and collingwood lose this week, its quite likely that we will "host" them at the MCG prelim!

                          It makes me sick.

Ok, so what's the problem with beating Collingwood at the MCG in our "home" PF? Means more Pie supporters will be able to watch the humiliation of their team!

Much as that sounds good, Most Sydney supporters would rather see it in the flesh, and enjoy the 65% winning probability of home teams, rather than the 35% of winning away.
Getting into the Grand final, against a non-vic side, with Saddo, Cressa, and Micky all back is where we want to be.
