What past teams haved placed 4th & won the flag?

This is one for all of you history pundits.

Just curious about the odds of it happening!

Adelaide in recent memory, the year they knocked Cressa out at the G and Plugger was injured (or retired perhaps)

That filthy Carlton scum in '45 came from fourth. Their go the biff tactics landed them the Cup at the Bloods expense.

I think teh more relevant question is, is that of the teams that came from 4th and won it, how many won/lost in their first final.

As much as i hate to say it, i think, if the swans don't win this week they are up against it in the Prelim

From those stats we can pretty much safely say that one of Port and Collingwood will be in the grandfinal.

If you consider 5 out of 12 a safe bet.

I think swans_premiers was referring to the fact that each of those statistics contained either the 1st or 2nd placed teams, or both, playing in the grand final. I'd say 12/12 is a pretty safe bet (relying on the last twelve years).

Yep - it's not surprising that at least one of the top two make it through to the GF, and I doubt (although I hope I'm wrong) this year will be any different.

That was Adelaide in 1997, and what a classic finals series.

Defeated WC in qualifying final and Geelong in semi final, both at home, then 'Dogs in a great last qtr comeback in prelim, then Saints in the big one.

In those days the final 8 played differently, with 1 v.8, 2 v.7, etc, and the two highest winners had the week off. So, Adelaide's 4th probably wasn't too different to finishing 5th, except they had the home game against Geelong. This was a major controversy and led to the change in the rules.

Of course, the other major difference is there was no major standout that year in teams (for goodness sake - Saints and 'Dogs were favourites!!), so the field was a bit weaker that year IMHO.

That was 1998. I think Plugger played but PK was definitely out - it was the year he did his knee in round 17 against Port.

But that game was at the SCG, in the pouring rain. After we lost Cressa, our elite midfield was pretty much just Schwatta.
