    Garry Lyon on Swans

    http://www.heraldsun.news.com.au/footy/common/story_page/0,8033,%255E20121,00.html

For those of you desperate for Victoria Channel 9's repect, here it it in black and white, print it and frame it before it fades away forever (again).

I like Garry by the way, especially this morning.

Having still not seen Sydney play live for a couple of years, and probably only a handful of times on television, they were a revelation to me on Sunday.
        Excuse me?

A senior media commentator whos job it is to comment on all things AFL hasn't seen the Swans play for 2 YEARS!?!?!?

          CTS.....my thoughts exactly....
When I read that I though he must be joking, surely!!! This may go some way to explaining the dross about the Swans that seems to emanate down south...
Thank goodness we have a friend in Bruce at least!!!
"Davis...Davis has kicked 2...he snaps from 40...dont tell me, dont tell me, hes kicked a goal....unbelievable stuff from Nick Davis, can you believe this, he's kicked 3 final quarter goals and Swans are within 3 points..."

It has only been this year that the Melbourne media have even bothered with Sydney. I would like to see Gary Lyon commentate a Swans game. However, when I saw this article while I was reading the paper in class, I thought "finally the media is forgetting about Port and focusing on us" and that "they're apologising for Saturday and the times I heard about the planned schedule for the next week".

I am frequently flabbergasted by the lack of knowledge of professional commentators and media writers about teams outside their favourite circle of clubs - not just the Swans, though we probably suffer more than most clubs because most of the media is based in the southern states.

These guys get paid good money - some of them heaps of money - basically just to watch footy and write about it. If that was my job, I would consider it a basic requirement to watch every game played of a weekend at least once. If you watch on tape and fast forward through the breaks, that amounts to a total of about 16 hours of time. Given that the standard working week for most of us is 35-40 hours, that isn't exactly an onerous requirement, and still leaves plenty of time for researching, writing, presenting etc etc.

Doesn't surprise me about Gary Lyon. His profile in Melbourne seems to be more akin to the Hank Bulger Show. My observation is that he is not one of the "respected" commentators, and indeed not taken that seriously.

Blokes like Sheahan, Connolly and Terry Wallace give me the impression that they spend a lot of time at the footy and in front of the TV.

Gary Lyon is not heard that often on the radio or TV these days on the shows that count.

I think he is one of the more insightful commentators around, but his article about how great the Swans are is based on one game, and therefore is worth nothing.

I'd love to go through this years episodes of teh Sunday Footy show and see how many comments he's made about players having never seen them play (eg: Schneider etc)

Gary Lyon is an acolyte of Eddie McGuire, and his opinion is worth about as much as the other McGuire disciple, Sam Newman.

I wonder how many of the selectors for the Rising Star and All Australian awards have seen the team???? At least the umpires are there at the game!

Those three are probably not the worst, but it's not only the likes of Lyon who are ill-informed. A couple of weeks ago David Parkin commented on TF how Sydney play a high possession brand of footy. I suspect he based this on the Collingwood game alone, where we did over possess, plus a hang-over from the later Eade years. But wouldn't have taken much research to work out this isn't true.

Even this Monday, the three panelists "agreed" that Goodes form this year had come out of the blue. They wouldn't have had to watch many games from the second half of last year to see the gradual improvement in him - he's really only taken off this year where he left off at the end of last. Just checking that he'd come 3rd in the B&F (behind two very consistent and well-performed team mates) would have given a clue.

I notice quite often when watching 'On the Couch' the number of times the guys miss quite a few games on the weekend. If it was my job I'd sit and watch nearly all the games. Maybe that's what I should do and offer my services to the Herald Sun. I'm sure I could do a better job than half of them!!
