He unecessarily complicates the game, going into deep tactical reviews which are often tediously long and unimportant. He also commits the cardinal sin of using Americanised terms to describe playing positions. Quarterback?.... such a position doesn't exist in our game...

He's one of the least liked commentators on TV. Closely followed by SOS who rarely has anything meaningful to say.

Spot on about Dermie. People think he knows what he's talking about, by using big words (that he doesn't know the meaning of), and talking vague rubbish. He has got absolutely no idea, for mine. After the Crows got belted by Collingwood, he came out the next morning, saying that the Crows were certaindies for the flag. And look where they're now. What an idiot....

I'm relatively new to the game and I like Dermott's input. He sees things I'd never notice and reads what's happening when I'd have trouble seeing it in slomo replay.

I'm no fan of Brereton, but the only survey I've seen of commentators had him by far the most popular 'colour' man on TV.

The game changes, Neored. You probably think that the position "On-Baller" still does exist. Quarterbacking (now I'm inventing verbs is an astute way of describing a style of play not obviously in evidence 20 years ago. The game changes.....Essendon gets outmuscled, Essendon forget how to play in the rain when two or three years ago they were the best in the business.

There was a Herald Sun footy poll a while ago where fans rated their favourite commentator/special comments. Dermie was pretty low on the list. Garry Lyon was the fans favourite

I like Garry Lyons style, he doesn't over elaborate, gets to the point and on the whole makes relevant points.

The game does change and I'm more than happy for it to do so. I do not however believe we need to introduce foreign sporting terms into our own native sport. It isn't necessary, and in any case most people do not watch the NFL and haven't got a bloody idea about what a quarterback is and what he does. The term thefore is unecessary, when better terms could be found to describe the role of the player.

And as for the Essendon comment, well firstly playing at TD essentially denies us the opportunity to practice in such conditions. And secondly when YOUR club wins 16 premierships, then your insults may carry more weight.

Victorian clubs and supporters are the reason the competition exists. Its the reason why a large part of the game is based on history and tradition, which is why the game is what it is today. We're more than happy to accept Johnny come latelies like yourself, but ask that you respect our ways.

After all we've taken care of the game for over 100 years, and I think even you would agree that its in pretty good condition. AS opposed to the other football code.

Strange - I interpreted Sharp's comment as an observation, not an insult.

But talking about insults, maybe you should refrain from referring to the Swans as "Johnny come latelies" while a "guest" on our board. The Swans are a foundation club and thus as much a part of the history of the VFL/AFL as Essendon. And even in our current manifestation, you need us as much as we need you. Don't kid yourself otherwise.
