Oh the short memory of the Melbourne football media

If this was meant to be funny I am not laughing. Have they forgotten we've already beaten them twice this year??

    Voss is enemy No.1
    15 September 2003 Herald Sun
    By SCOTT GULLAN

PAUL Roos watched Friday night's semi-final between Brisbane and Adelaide with his players at the Channel 10 studios in Sydney.

Good thing: Michael Voss may be "The Boss", but the Lions may struggle to find someone to match-up on Swan Adam Goodes in their preliminary final.

A snapped achilles meant the Swans coach had to send three of his assistant coaches ? John Longmire, Steve Malaxos and Craig Holden ? to do the spying duties at the Gabba.

Today Roos has a detailed report from the trio on his desk about the Lions.

The Herald Sun has been lucky enough to get a sneak peek at what it includes:

1: BE very concerned about Michael Voss. Forget about what you saw the other night against Collingwood, they've pumped him with juice and he's as good as new. He'll probably play three quarters at best but if we can keep him in check we'll win. Maybe have to set Kirky (Brett Kirk) on him.

2: JASON Akermanis's sec ond half was a worry. He really set them alight. Played more on the wing and we're going to have to try to get into his head early. Maybe a job for Kirky.

3: SIMON Black is playing like a Brownlow medallist again. Just kills you around the stoppages. Probably have to send Kirky with him.

4: HEARD Lethal saying after the game that `Aker' and Nigel Lappin were finally back to full health. The Crows tried to tag Lappin and he still got 29 touches. Runs so hard that probably the only bloke we've got who could go with him is Kirky.

5: DON'T kick the ball any- where near Justin Leppitsch. He slaughtered Carey and didn't take any notice when the Crows tried to pull him back to the last line.

6: WE have to run and play- on at all costs. The Lions defence is too well organised if we just lob it in there. Mal Michael is one of the best spoilers in the business.

7: WHATEVER we do we have to control Jonathan Brown in the first quarter. He's struggling to run games out but is red-hot early and sets the tone for his side. Maybe a job for Leaping Leo (Barry).

8: YOU need to get on the phone and stir up Lynchy because it was all a bit too easy for him against the Crows. Suggest you keep talking about how hot and taxing the game was and that surely with his chronic fatigue he will struggle backing up. Otherwise whatever you said to Schauble before last week's game against Tredrea, say exactly the same thing this week.

9: WE need to seriously con- sider tagging Luke Power. He's no longer the goalsneak who looks about 14 years old. His run through the middle was outstanding against the Crows after he started at half-back. Kirky could be the man.

10: CHRIS Johnson has got the yips kicking out. Need to really press a tight zone and make him go short and wide.

11: ADAM Goodes holds the key for us. They don't have anyone to match up with him. Lions ruck options Clark Keating and Jamie Charman are big and strong but our man will jump all over them. They'll probably try to rough him up so tell `Cressa' (Daryn Cresswell) and the boys to be on the look out.

12: WHATEVER juice Voss is on we need to find some and give it to Micky O'Loughlin. We desperately need another forward target so they won't just zone back on `Bazza' (Barry Hall) all night.

13: NEED to show the video of Round 20 win at the Gabba every day this week. `Lethal' (Leigh Matthews) will probably think we'll do things differently, but we're thinking we shouldn't change a thing.

14: CAN you get on to Rex Hunt again and get him to give us rev-up. That was gold last week.

15: WE think we've nailed down who Kirky should tag ? Voss, Akermanis, Black, Lappin and Power.

PS: Just scooting down to Surfers for a few waves. Everything you need to know has been listed.

We'll be back by Thursday for selection.

Just got home from picking up my framed, signed Brett Kirk heritage gurnsey. If he can beat all his "opponents" (and I know he can), it'll be worth a mint.

    Go Captain....
And go the MIGHTY Swannies....Why should the next two weeks be any different from the rest of the season?

It's all in fun, but it goes to show that Kirk is at least getting his deserved accolades. No one knew him, outside us, last year. He will win the B & F ahead of Goodes, for consistency.
      Staying ahead of the game...

        My thoughts exactly....

Go the MIGHTY Swans......Wooden spoon to Preliminary final in just 23 short weeks (and Grand final in 25)

          Kirk on Voss
          Williams/Maxfield on Akermanis
          Crouch on Hart
          Cressa on Black

I'd like to see Maxfield on Akermanis. There'll be tempers flaring.

Cressa doesn't have the run to go with Black, nor the instinct to get the ball first. Crouch could do a job on Aker, Fosdike would match up on Hart. Kirk on whichever of Voss or Black is in the middle...we need him to stop their quick clearances. Williams to play on whichever of them is hanging off the back of the pack.

More importantly we need Power, Hart, Lappin and Notting to worry about stopping Bolton, Williams, Maxfield, Cresswell, Davis and Fosdike. Yes Fosdike...we need to play so well that they (to their horror) all of a sudden go "who's on Fosdike?" That would be cool. Don't forget that Fossy got under Port's guard while their medium ranked midfielders (Carr, etc.) stood around waiting to receive.

We need to get them to pay respect and worry about their direct opponents. If Black or Voss can be forced to worry about Kirk's possessions and focus half of his effort on breaking even, then we are half way there.

I hope every Lion gets a copy of this article. Funny how we thrash Port, Port thrashes the Bombers but we aren't half the team the Dons are?

Ideally, the Lions will be thinking our other games were an aberation and we don't have any way to defeat them if they play the way they did against the Crows. But if they are that stupid perhaps they should switch to Rugby League.

But even if/when we win it'll just be a strange mathematical fluke. Remember Leigh's comment that the Swans only won because we scored more points?

Lee Mathews is one of Fossies biggest fans .

It's a bit left field, but I think Ben Matthews may come into the equations so far as Voss is concerned. If Leigh tries to take Kirky out of the stoppages by sending Vossy forward, I think Ben or even RO'K could be a possibility.

Ben has a strong body like Voss, adequate fitness, he is uninjured and could exploit Voss's lack fitness, however my suggestion is more concerned with keeping Kirky on the ball! Black or Lappin for Kirky!

It's a bit of fun (and also recognition of Kirk's performance). Some people get a bit precious and overly sensitive of their team.

Just do what we did against them last time, and we'll be in a GF.

                          Kirk on Black.
                          Crouch on Aker.

Voss will get the ball, no matter who you put on him.

C.Bolton on Brown (please not Saddo, if he comes back in)
                          Schauble on Lynch

Williams on Voss may well be the plan - Roos has done it before and it makes sense.

Players like Voss and Buckley are going to get tons of the ball regardless. Expect Willo to be his assigned opponent, keep an eye on him, but not necessarily play him too close. Give Voss something to worry about himself, because Willo has the speed to get away from Voss and to cause damage himself.

It's also a valid tactic to break a probable tag on Williams himself. If Matthews assigns someone to stay close, it will be a two on one which will clog up Voss' space when things are in tight. And hopefully allows one of our boys some space to run around and create havoc themselves.

Obviously this happens all the time - ie the attempt to break a tag by getting that player to tag himself and it won't be allowed to go unchecked all night if we're getting on top. But I suspect things will start that way.

Mathews is the best alternative if Voss is doing too much damage and Roos wants to tie him down a bit. Mathew's tackling in recent weeks has been first class, and he has the body strength to retard Voss if he can stay close enough.
