Sydney has already ruled star forward Michael O?Loughlin out of Saturday night?s preliminary final against Brisbane at Telstra Stadium.

O?Loughlin has not yet recovered from the hamstring tear he sustained during the Swans? final round match against Melbourne.

The Swans? leading goalkicker in 2000 and 2001 was desperate to play this weekend and had planned to put himself through a series of sprints to see if his hamstring could withstand the pressures of an AFL final.

However the Swans, who have shown all throughout 2003 they can win matches without their best players, have decided not to take any risks.

The usual minimum recovery period for a hamstring injury such as the one sustained by O?Loughlin is 21 days and it will be exactly 21 days come Saturday night from the time he suffered the injury in the dying minutes of that round 22 win over Melbourne.

However the Swans ? who won a memorable qualifying final against Port Adelaide at AAMI Stadium a fortnight ago without the man who won their 1998 best and fairest and has twice been an All-Australian ? announced even before their first training session of the week on Monday afternoon that O?Loughlin was not yet ready to play.

This has got to be part of the games surely, if it's not it would mean that it's got worse which would put him in doubt for the GF as well.

Swans lose O'Loughlin


Sydney forward Michael O'Loughlin has been ruled out of Saturday night's AFL preliminary final against Brisbane at Telstra Stadium.

O'Loughlin tore his hamstring late in the final quarter of the round 22 victory over Melbourne on August 30.

He missed the qualifying final victory over Port Adelaide, but had been considered a good chance of recovering in time for Saturday's match against the Lions.

Or it might be an acknowledement that Saddo fully fit and they can only play one of them, so play the one who's 100%

He did it in rd 7, 1997 against Geelong, and he did play the following week.

Given the nature of his injury, I think it was always exceptionally unlikely Magic would play this week. He'd be lucky to play in the GF even.

No...that would also be incorrect. The Cressa kneecap story (I'm still squirming) took place against Geelong at Kardinia Park in a home and away match in 1997. No finals were on the horizon at that point.

Fair enough but it was only yesterday we were hearing about the 3 km run and the 20m sprint test later on this week.

On thinking about it a bit further it's possible they've done it to settle particularly the younger players, and prepare them for their required roles minus any speculation.

I still think he's a chance though

Who said he would play on Brown, that job will go to Bolton first.

Would not surprise me if Saddington played up forward out of the square, which leaves BBBBH to roam around at CHF.

We all know Saddington can take a grab and he is a pretty good shot at goal when he gets a chance so it may be a crucial move to play him forward if he plays.

Will also mean he would need to be marked by either Leppa or Mal Michael which should help BBBBH not having the second man up against him all the time when the Brisbane defenders zone off and float over to the next contest.
