You can't just point the finger at Sydney for doing this...

Also everyone slams the 'bandwagon' supporters but really we need them if we want to build up our supporter base. Who cares that the only reason they come to the matches in the first place is because the team is doing so well?! If you ask the players what they think of 'bandwagon' supporters at this moment they will say they don't care as long as the fans keep coming out to the games to support them. The bigger the crowd of fans, the better ----- whether they be bandwagon supporters or been around for years.

Really you're attempt to compare the Demons to Sydney is laughable.

Melbourne traditionally does not have a large supporter base, and agood percentage of them are shall we say...upper class snobs. Rah Rah. They're predominantly interested in heading off to the snow than going to the MCG.

Why dont you compare Sydney with the Victorian big three Essendon Collingwood, Carlton. Carltons membership has surged this year, despite their pathetic season , and Collingwood mantained great crowds throughout the 90's despite their poor performances.

While AFL may not be the No 1 football code in NSW and QLD you can not ignore the fact that the Lions have averaged more than 10,000 per game than the Broncos for the last few years . The idiot box has been the traditional domaln of NRL supporters but in Brisbane last weekend more viewers watched Ch10 coverage of the AFL than Ch 9 coverage of the NRL finals at corresponding times. .

True the Lions crowds have been impressive over the past few years. But lets not forget their team have experiences uprecedented success of the corresponding period. The true test of the AFL impact in Brisbane will be when the Lions aren't performing as well. I bet you that the minute the Lions start slipping down the ladder the crowds will diminish substantially.

As for the TV coverage, overall Broncos games have pumped Lion games ratings wise. The final between Coll and Brisbane was the ONLY time this year that the Lions beat the Broncos, and then only by 10,000. And lets not mention the ratings in Brisbane of non Lion games.

Its important that you make the distinction between supporting AFL and supporting the Swans/Lions.

In regard to bandwagoners THIS HAPPENS TO ALL CLUBS IN ALL SPORTS . eg in Canberra the Brumbies crowds have really picked up with recent successes compared to the attendances in their earlier lean years . Winning generates interest.

Exactly my point, that people are going to Sydney matches not because they've suddenly discovered a love for the AFL, but because they want to be part of a winning environment. And once that winning environment changes most dont return.

While we are discussing bandwagoners I am always amazed that some supporters can hold themselves out to be "TRUE SUPPORTERS " while looking down their noses at newcomers. I say " the more the merrier".

I dont look down at newcomers, but I certainly have little respect for bandwagoners. I've supported my team through thick and thin, through good and bad, my support does not hinge on my clubs ladder position.

I have NO respect for those that jump on when times are good, then ditch the boat when its sinking. It is true that this isn't unique to Sydney, however when you're discussing the development of the AFL in NSW , it provides a stark reminder of the realities of the situation. That the AFL isn't making any substantial inroads, that NSW people support the Swans not footy in general.

A few years ago at the Swans v Hawks final at Docklands I had the privilege of sitting next to a lady who attended the 1933 Grand Final and who had been a fervent Swans supporter all her life . She was still a great believer in attracting new supporters so as to keep the club viable. No elitism from her.

And as I've said to those that go when things are rosy and stay on despite the club fortunes.. then great. The fact is though that the majority who went to the Collingwood game at TS and those who will go to the pre-lim wont return.

We're not interested in your petty point scoring...though we do appreciate well thought out and well intentioned comments from the other side. I'm sick of your whining.

Who is the side who has gained the most fans in the last couple of years? Collingwood.

Who is the side who has lost a bucket load of members? Essendon.

Why? Because one of those sides has been winning more and one of those sides has been losing more than in previous years. That should be the last bloody comment on this issue. We are trying to enjoy the build up to this game, thank you.

I think you are all downplaying the appeal of AFL. The first game I saw a few years ago was Tigers vs Doggies. Crap game in retrospect but I thought it was one of the most entertaining spectacles I'd ever seen.

Started following the Swannies and love our present success. But went to see the Bombers in 2001 just to see what a great team looked like.

With knowledge I've become more discerning. But I'll still turn on the TV for any game showing and continue watching if it's a good one and turn it off if it's not.

So anyone there on Saturday who hasn't seen AFL before is likely to leave saying "I can't believe anyone could do that!" no matter what the standard of the game is like.

Hopefully, they leave the game saying "How about Hall, Schneider and Davis each kicking 10 unanswered goals in the last quarter. I didn't expect it to be a massacre."

Let me just make a few points.

1) All of my arguments are based on facts. One of my personal dislikes is when people talk crap without backing it up with facts, so I do ensure that my arguments have a basis in fact. I challenge you to disprove any one of my arguments.

2) My views on football are representative of the majority of Victorians. I'm not a interstate club hater, but I do think that at times the contributions that the Victorian people have made to the game are downplayed.

3) I do not deliberately set out to offend any of you, I respect your club and quite admire Paul Roos. I do think that some of you have a rose tinted view of the competition though, and cannot tolerate criticism of your club irregardless of well argued or though out it may be.

Laughable eh ? Ooh la la , how conceited of you. I thought we were discussing how a true supporter always goes to the game, and never jumps off a sinking ship.

Fact is, and no matter how you try to explain it, Demon supporters haven't been going to games . Though i must say, it's funny how I can cast me memory back to the successful year they made the Grand Final, and recall much, much bigger crowds, and I'm almost positive that the slopes at Thredbo were available back then also.

But fair enough, because they follow a Melbourne based club, and not Sydney - we'll justify them not going to the games and being a true blue supporter, by saying they're up themselves, and they like to ski .



Because deep down we all know, bandwagoners don't exist in Melbourne, don't we ?
