    Gemma's post-season article...

Feedback can be left for her royal highness here

177th Senior AFL Match - Round 4, 2009 - Sydney vs Carlton, SCG. This is obviously out of date. I suppose I'll update it once I could be bothered sitting down with the fixture and working it out....

          Gemma...lovely article....
I am beginning to come out of the numbness I felt on Saty night, and with Adam's Brownlow triumph...I am beginning to get those red and white blood cells circulating again...I, like you, just can't wait for the 2004 season...to see the boys...to sing the song...to cheer, cheer the red and the white....god, football is such an emotional game!!!
"Davis...Davis has kicked 2...he snaps from 40...dont tell me, dont tell me, hes kicked a goal....unbelievable stuff from Nick Davis, can you believe this, he's kicked 3 final quarter goals and Swans are within 3 points..."

            Brilliant article Gem!

I love it when people start showing raw emotion, especially in relation to a sporting club.

The guy next to you, Johnnie Mac, reciprocates your thoughts as well.

My night ended with several of us trudging up through Darlinghurst to JM's place. It was good, really good. Always good to spend time after a loss with others who are feeling the same as you.

I learnt that after the Socceroos loss to Uruguay in Montevideo. It helps to give things a sense of closure. Being with sports-ignoramuses, which Diego and I both agreed are a-plenty in Sydney, is horrible, as they belittle you for being so upset in your time of grief.

We drank and ate pizza until 6am, before RobbieAndo and I caught a cab back to my place so he could somehow struggle on to his Virgin plane.

I got an SMS from Diego on the Sunday. he said he was "walking up King St (Newtown) dazed and lost". So we met up for a mad $6 breakie at the Erko Hotel. The more we got chatting, the happier we both became. And the more we realised that we were pretty much kindred spirits, people highly passionate about not only the Swans but sport in general (both with mainly sports-ignorant friends) eager to develop the atmosphere at Swans' matches.

I then proceeded to go out later that day to the Midnight Shift and get blotto. Yes, everyone knows how much I love my football, but suddenly with the freedom of not having to stress about tickets, flights, accommodation and MONEY, I could suddenly get on with my life and enjoy the off-season.

Next year, well it will take me a while to get back into it all. But by about Round 2-3 I'll be well into the swing of things again, as my soccer support becomes less and less relevant and more and more peripheral.

One thing is for sure, if we ARE still at the top of the league come July/August, I WILL be taking the days both preceding and after the Grand Final OFF WORK! I do NOT want to go through the hell I've been through over recent days, that's for sure.

Drinking solves everything. The drinking session we had at Johny Macs after the match was just what the doctor needed. Stuff sleep, stuff being sober - I just wanted to forget the game.

That was hardly the case. While we didn't agrue over why we lost, we managed to sit though a bit of the replay. When we got our mugs on TV, we went off. After that we flicked though the 96 Finals matches including that kick, plus a few soccer matches.

I was a great night and by the time I got on the plane I was gone. Still I had to get home and so at 1pm, 15 hours after the match was over I finally got some sleep.

When I woke up yesterday it finally all hit home and I was on a real downer, however Goodes winning the Brownlow last night cheered be up a little bit.

Its starting to dawn on me that the season is over and its going to be 6 months before we all meet again. This season has been the most enjoyable season of Football I have sat though, one where I expected little and got a whole lot more.

great article Gemma, really enjoyed it, and thanks for the mention!!!!

just a pity its going to be another year and a half before i see the swans live again (not many home or away games in Montr?al Qu?bec you see), but am looking forward to sitting near you at many games in the future.

also, great to see so many old mates at the game last week. the CS is really looking up at the moment. we look better than any other in the AFL by a country mile. see, the big flags WORK! defend them at all costs!

as for the GF on the weekend, well ive watched it 4 times already. watching the pies lose GF's is extremely wonderful to watch!

                cheers

We'll make sure we win for you when you are in Montreal. (It's on 26 hours home on a plane, you know!)

PS:- Having done the Canada thing in 99, I seriously can see you not coming home Mr JM. (Still, you'll never whinge about the 'cold' at Carlton again after a winter in Quebec!)
