The Swans dominated for most of the game, and in some ways it would have been an injustice if the Bombers had managed to pinch it. But it could have so easily happened - some Swans sides in the past would have capitulated even further once the opposition hit the front like that; so the Swans showed a lot of character to steady and regain the lead.
Having said at the 8 minute mark when Sydney were leading by 32 points "Essendon can't win from here", I would have had egg on my face if the Bombers had managed to hold on.
Scott Stevens - his inaccuracy could have been costly, but overall I thought he was a big positive for the Swans. After BBBBH and some of the other big names went off, especially with Hird and Lloyd still on the field, I thought an Essendon comeback was a possibility in the third quarter; but Stevens' efforts gave the Swans a buffer that turned out to be just enough.
Off the field, the crowd was a bit disappointing compared to the last couple of years; but even so it's more than any other trial match will get - and there'll be Wizard Cup games next weekend with smaller crowds than that. The game didn't seem to have been promoted as much as the last couple of years; and the weather, the peace march and trackwork on the North Shore line certainly didn't help.
But, despite the reduced numbers, it was good to catch up with some of the RWO people. And great to have the footy back.
