    Trading Danger

I hope all this talk about trading Saddington, Fosdike etc is just talk. I would hate to see Sydney trade a player and cause unrest and disquiet in the club a la Croad, Woewodin, Essendon etc. Hawthorn and Melbourne had dreadful years after causing massive unrest in their clubs. I know people who gave up their Hawthorn memberships after Croad went. Saddington and Fosdike seem happy with the Swans and living in Sydney. They are solid players who should play many more games with us. Many touted draft picks don't deliver. Just watch Hawthorn fall into a heap after what has happened to Rawlings. I would only trade a player who is desperately unhappy at the club and I don't think we have any of those at this stage.

Sydney played at 100% ability this year to get to where it was. It can't sustain this next year and needs a key defender to supplement the side.

Hawthorn delivered Croad for Luke Hodge. I would rather have Hodge and Croad will probably be traded back to Victoria this year.

Woewoedin's trade was not the cause of Melbourne's "woes" this year.

If we can secure the No 2 draft pick from carlton, then trading Saddington and Nicks for example will be worth it.

I don't think Carlton would give up the number 2 pick for Saddington and Nicks.

Maybe they did, maybe they didn't. Certainly Leo, Kirk ans B2 had huge seasons which they will need to back up next year if we're to do the same again (or better).

B1, Goodes and Hall were also key reasons for the improvement but I reckon they were just playing to their true potential.

Also, there is room for improvement to come from within the squad - with Kennelly, LRT and Schneider seemingly the senior players with the most potential to get better, though it may take another couple of years.

And I really think it's a couple of hard nuts in the midfield that we need to supplement the side, far more than a key defender.

I'd be suprised if Carlton didn't take that trade, but I don't think the Swans will offer it. I hope they don't, I'd like to keep Saddo but not Matthew, for his own sake. He would have a better chance of playing a part at another club, too many players to fill the type of role he does at Sydney.
I knew him as a gentle young man, I cannot say for sure the reasons for his decline
We watched him fade before our very eyes, and years before his time

Does anyone know where Saddington and Fosdike finished in the B&F this year?

IIRC Sadds has been top 10 for the previous 3 years, whilst Fosdike was top 10 last year and 'Most Improved'. This would suggest the match committee do not think they should be discarded unless a very favourable trade came up.

i doubt that will happen as carlton don't have another draft pick for 2 rounds due to salary cap situations.

Saddo was a top 10 pick. He is a fully developed player now. Of course he is worth a high draft pick, which is a gamble at the best of times. In fact, I would say that if we were to take Carlton's pick, for Saddo, they instead would be the side offering other things as well.

Doesn't really work that way though.

Clubs seem to value early draft picks highly because of the chance of netting a superstar. Of course this can happen with any pick but, understandably, the chance is deemed to be greater with early picks.

Once a player is several years into his career, you will have a better idea of whether they will be that elusive star or not. By that time the pick they were initially taken with is irrelevant.

As an illustration, take Goodes vs Saddo. Both were taken in the 1997 draft, one in the first round and the other in the third. Which would be more highly sought after now if they were available for trade? Goodes, quite clearly.

Best way to gauge what a player might be worth is to look at recent trades. Richmond 'bought' Kane Johnson for (effectively) the number 2 pick last year. Collingwood 'bought' Shane Woewodin for the number 14 (I think) pick. Difficult to know how Saddo matches up against these two. He's probably not thought to be as classy as Johnson, but that maybe slightly compensated for by him being a "tall".

Of course, you also have to take into account the circumstances of the trading clubs - ie Woewodin probably came a bit cheap because Melbourne were desparate to off-load him for salary cap reasons and the Pies were about the only takers.

By the way, this is all hypothetical. I am in no way advocating (or otherwise) trading Saddo for the no 2 pick.

Latest mail from Carlton is that trading that pick is not negotiable.

I have to say I think all the talk about Stevens being traded is another danger. This guy really put it together as a defender in the final against Port and is definitely worth another year.
