Looks like we can't even give them away!

Carlton has rejected a Sydney offer in which three veteran players were offered in exchange for the Blues' third-round pick.

Carlton was offered Brad Seymour, Matthew Nicks and Rowan Warfe as a package trade for Carlton's third-round draft choice, No. 34 overall.

    Interesting, from both sides.

I can understand why Carlton want to draft a youngster with their second overall pick but if they carry out the wholesale clear out they've been talking about, they will need some experienced players to complement their youngsters. Plus, the talk about this year's draft is that after the top 20 or so, it is very even. So a club is almost as likely to pick up a good player with a 4th or 5th round pick as with a 3rd.

From Sydney's point of view, that offer (if correct) really doesn't value those players very highly at all - at least in a trade value sense. Warfe may not be the classiest player who ever graced the footy field but he always gives his all and would add a bit of toughness to the Blues. Plus Nicks is still capable of playing some very good footy when his mind is on it. Seymour would still command a place in Sydney's senior team if he could get himself fit, but I can understand Carlton being wary of his injury record.

Agreed that it is a lot to give away for an early 3rd round pick.

From this it seems that some of the younger players under pressure to keep their spots (Ablett, Stevens and co) will be retained. Could be good news for Buchanan if it goes through as I would have thought he's in the firing line to be de-listed otherwise.

The other issue here is (I'm pretty sure anyway) that Nicks and Warfe are contracted for another season, and unless we can offload them we are stuck with them

I still think there's a place for Seymour in team if he can get himself on the park

Maybe offer Warfe and Nicks for their 4th round pick?

A couple of days ago Barham was quoted as saying Sydney would only be participating in the first 3 rounds of the draft. If this is the case, there's little point trading for a 4th round pick unless they want to ontrade it to another club.

Maybe another option would be to offer one or two of these players to Carlton in return for swapping third round picks. Given my earlier comment about the reported evenness of the draft there may be little value to Sydney in doing this, but it doesn't look as if these three players fit into Sydney's plans so maybe there would be little lost either.

If the story is correct , the offer and the rejection is a big slap in the face for the players involved. They are obviously unwanted and would seriously need to consider their options . Although still retaining a contract would be a comfort for the players concerned.

              Maybe, maybe not.

To varying degrees they have probably been warned that there will be limited senior opportunities for them next year - in much the same way as Kirk and McPherson were apparently told last year. That doesn't mean they have no value to the club. If injuries strike they can still play a role. But it's unlikely any will be on the list in, say, 3 years time. (The possible exception to that might be Seymour if he can get his body together.)

They might prefer an opportunity to play senior footy in their twilight years rather than spend the year in Canberra. There are a handful of clubs who are chockablock with young, raw, slight players who need time to develop - Carlton, WB and Geelong are the 3 that spring to mind - and that would value some middle-of-the-road but experienced and capable players who can help the kids develop.

Given their ages, none commands great value at the trade table. So while this offer could be interpreted as a basement sale, it could equally well be just an attempt to give these players opportunities they may not get next year at Sydney. Doesn't mean they have no value left to Sydney if they stay put.

All a bit of conjecture but hopefully it makes some kind of sense!

If we threw in a bag of donuts - that would clinch it.

Wait and see they may be interested later - or for a later pick. Those guys will probably find more opportunities elsewhere - Seymour only because he has lacked fitness.

In previous decades Carlton had a good record of turning those type of players around.

34 would seem an odd one to trade for specifically, given though that we obivously want the old boys out, but maybe we want it to on-trade in another deal?

                      Very strange deal.

Nicks alone would be worth more than that pick.

I would like to see Seymour retire rather than play on as an old, injured hack. He has been a great servant of the club and it would be sad to see him finish his career without the honour he deserves.

That offer makes perfect sense to me, but it is highley unlikely that Carlton will take it at this point in time.

If Carlton were to snare a Stevens or Brown in the trade period I would suggest they won't take it as they then would draft young (2 & 34) and use Stevens or Brown to plug gaps now while those young boys develop.

But if they fail to pick up a Stevens or a Brown (which all indications are they won't), then I would suggest they would be eager to deal to get some expeirence and use their #2 pick for a young kid.

                        From our point of veiw:

Warfe - Will have limited game time next year and the club would hope to be able to offload his contract to another club. Carlton is the best option

Seymour - This is probably the best indication that Heath James will be on the senior list next year as there is not enough room for him and Seymour with their history of injuries to be on the list together

Nicks - Would be seen by the club as a keeper if no good deals are around and has probably only been thrown in as a sweetner for Carlton to take the bait

I'd imagine Carlton are reserving pick 34 to try and package with one of their players - other than the priority pick they really have nothing to offer other clubs in a trade.

Otherwise they might want to hold on to it until the last day of the trading period when they might pick up a handy player who just has to be moved on for salary cap reasons (like Blumfield etc last year).

If all that failed I would have thought Carlton would accept that deal - all 3 are definitely competent AFL-standard players with 3-4 years left.

This might be half of the story. We could throw three names in to the hat for the Carlton to pick a couple or that we are going to get a player from Carlton in return (with the pick). We dont actually know.

BTW I thought, Nicks for Wheatley deal was on track. Some demon fans seem to rate Nicks :-).

                            So you would never know.

On the record, if we get another thing for Warfe+ Seymour + Nicks, I would be over the moon. Not that they are that bad (if any Carlton reader is around) but they are simply supplemental to our need.

fair enough Blues... how stupid would Carlton be to give away pick 34 for a hack, a has-been and an apparent has-been?
