They spent quite a few years on the bottom like StKilda and got early and priority (I think) picks. That enabled them to get good young players. They appointed a good administration that was able to maximise there draft picks by choosing wisely and building a team spirit. Unlike Stkilda they have made the most of their list by the recruitment of a good coach..

It is all so easy really <G> We have the administration and the coach. All we have to do is spent a few years at the bottom. I think Roos probably thought that would happen this year and we would be able to get early picks. Back to the drawing board.

Without doubt Copeland is the one we should pick up. Played a top game in GF and is the tall back we are looking for.

I doubt though that they would let him go now that he is emerging as a good player. He is probably not taking up a lot of their salary cap either.

In the Sunday Sun in Melbourne this morning Shane Morrison, son of ex South player Peter Morrison was mentioned as wanting to go. Problem here is that Peter was one of the players oppossed to going to Sydney. He is a key player position player apparently, but blood may be thicker than water. I believe we could have picked him up under the father/son rule.

Played 3 games in 3 seasons, and from what I saw was regularly in the best in the 2's.

Yeah, I must admit I'd expected Sydney to show interest in Morrison (193 cm key position player) rather than Notting or the other Lions, if for no other reason than that we'd probably get him for next to nothing.

Neither, but does that mean we need two specific players and two players only?
Of course not, but as I understand it there is a limit on the number of players that any club can trade, and I would expect we would focus on picking up the players we really need to improve the team.

If Notting, or any other good player, fell in our lap in the pre-season draft, that would be a different matter!

There is no limit on the amount of players you trade for. However as has been said we have 2 needs to fill, but the likelyhood that we will fill them both is slim. Its one thing to say what we need, its another to get them.

Easy, Morrison is a forward not a defender and in any case will end up in Melbourne anyway.

Given the history of being Peter Morrison's son - it would be surprising if he ended up in Sydney.

            In some ways good though.

We probably need a player more similar to the father than the son

Not so. He has played at least as much football in defence as in the forward line for Brisbane's reserves, and has played back pocket, CHB and CHF for the seniors.

              Why?

He comes from Cairns, and his family lives in Queensland. What is his connection to Melb?

His father may be carrying some baggage in relation to the Swans, but I'm sure that if it came to the crunch, Dad would prefer Shane to play for the Swans than be delisted.

IIRC just a few years ago Peter Morrison gave the Swans a blast - he intimated that Mark Browning (QLD Teal Cup Coach) had put barriers in the way of his son.

His comment was something like "I and my son are still paying for it "

Still Sydney did name John Rantall in its team of the century - so you never know

Would give us four sons of former players - I would be in favour of it - just bury some more ugly demons of the past

That might be so, but he is seen as a CHF and the only reason he can't get a game at the Lions is that he has Jon Brown in front of him.

Because thats where he'll end up, most likely at the Bulldogs or Cats.

I don't want Notting - Morrison or Michael would do nicely.
He reminds him of the guys, close-set, slow, and never rattled, who were play-makers on the team. (John Updike, seeing Josh Kennedy in a crystal ball)

We already have four - he'd be number 5!

I guess technically speaking Davis didn't qualify - but you are absolutely correct

I would love to get Notting to the club - you can't have too many midfielder types - especially with Cressa going.

He could also pinch hit at Half Back - I reckon this would allow Kennelly to go to the HF or Wing - 30 goals a season easy for him.

But I would only give away 2nd round pick at best so we won't be getting him. We also won't get Mal Michael or anyone else with out draft picks.

Will be a very quiet trade period for us.

I suppose there will be a lot of trading without us involved early, but if we have room in the cap there could be some late pickings, even in the 'experienced' draft, with the other clubs spending their caps this week.

If our earliest pick is not providing a hot prospect what about swap it for a proven peformer if we can? We have to balance the squad and with Cressa and others going maybe we need a middling age player?

After our discussions over the last few weeks and with the draft as it is now, how critical are these father/son choices? You can win the grand final and pick up a gun player with your second pick!

Apparently he was born in melbourne apart from that I dont see why hed come down to Melbourne.
