The Sydney Swans are pleased to announce the appointment of Ross Lyon to the position of Assistant Coach.

Ross Lyon comes to the Club with a great depth of experience as a player and coach. He played 127 games for Fitzroy and two games for Brisbane and more recently has been with Carlton as an assistant coach of the senior side after coaching the Blues VFL side to successive finals series in 2000 and 2001.

"We knew when Steve Malaxos left his experience was going to be extremely difficult to replace but in Ross Lyon I believe we have an ideal replacement," Coach Paul Roos said.

"It is very pleasing that someone with the experience of Ross has accepted the offer to join the Club and we are very much looking forward to having him on board."

Didn't we have legal action with Ross Lyon when we tried to pick him up in the draft and couldn't then fit him in or something, and he went us?

Had me worried there for a sec... thought it may have been Gary Lyon who admitted in a newspaper article that he had only seen the swans one or twice in 2 years...and that from a media football commentator...LOL
"Davis...Davis has kicked 2...he snaps from 40...dont tell me, dont tell me, hes kicked a goal....unbelievable stuff from Nick Davis, can you believe this, he's kicked 3 final quarter goals and Swans are within 3 points..."

My recollection is that he was a sook as a footballer when he didn't get what he wanted and stood out of footy for a year.

Suggestion was that he was paid by another club to stand out.

Was overrrated for mine as a footballer and it couldn't be said that he has been involved with a successful club in recent times.

The coaching ranks must be a bit thin on the ground and I hope he has but a minor coaching role. Doesn't strike me as a real people person but obviously Roos sees some qualities in him, and Roos to date has shown excellent judgement.

            Here's hoping it works out.

when I first saw the subject I read it as "Lynch joins Swans"
I knew him as a gentle young man, I cannot say for sure the reasons for his decline
We watched him fade before our very eyes, and years before his time

Sydney had agreed to take Lyon as the 3rd pick overall (behind Roos) in the pre-season draft but was ruled ineligible at the last minute by the AFL, thus he landed at Brisbane instead where knee injuries finished his career

the legal action to which rob refers to was when we were going to pick up Tony Mcguiness from Adelaide, but the same thing happened again (noone else picked him up)

Lyon did not stand out of footy for a year

Did we agree to take Alistaire Lynch as well and the same thing happened or do I have that wrong? I may be confused with Lyon.

This looks like a great pick up. Was a very good player and has had some good coaching experience. Also is a good friend of Roosy's - will fit in well.

Gary Hocking is coaching at the moment, and was looking for a role at AFL level. I wouldn't have minded seeing if he could have imparted some of his playing style onto our midfielders.

I just hope this isn't the primary reason he got the job! 'Would hate to think Roos is giving out jobs for the boys. But time will tell.

Wanted to go to Sydney with Roosy - AFL ruled Sydney out of the pre-season draft as we did not have enough in our salary cap.

Ended up at the Bears (where he did nothing) but was very angry with Sydney.

Legendary for centre bounce work - how can I say doing the "scott burns" at centre bounces.

Will, I know about McGuiness I thought we had a very similar situation with Lyon, I am sure he blamed the Swans and action was threatened at least. Reggi I see concurs, I agree he went straight to Brisbane and had his career ended through injury virtually straight away.
