    Nine Picks

According to the Age we have nine picks in the draft....Anyone know how??

Cressa, MacPherson, Stevens are gone......plus Monty, O'Keefe, James uncontracted....that's six spots not officially offered, yet.
Anyone know who are the other uncontracted players are? Ablett? Hunt? And does the pre season draft happen before the draft proper?

The draft is completed before the pre season draft.

Every team gets allocated 8 rounds of draft picks irrespective of how many spots they have on their list. Once you have taken the number of players you need then you just pass on the rest of the picks.

I tend to beleive that the pick #45 we received for Stevens was probably going to be used for Ray Hall but that deal fell through.

Becuase we have traded for pick #45 we will now probably use it as it will have been a useless exercise in trading Stevens if we don't.

    Where does that leave us:

We started with a list of 37 (full list is 38).

We have lost Creswell, Mcpherson, Stevens so the list is down to 34 with four picks to use.

From all reports on this site McGlone and James will be elevated from the rookie list so that puts us back at 36. Micklejohn is able to kept on the rookie list another year.

So that leaves us with having to chop 2 players to use our 4 picks. You would think that would come from a group of Warfe, Seymour, Monty and possibly Ablett with factors such as salary cap considerations, injury concerns and what they individually bring to the team all factors in the decision. For instance if you bring in McGlone then how does Monty survive ?

As for both O'Keefe and Kirk who at this stage remain un-signed they now have the cut off date for the pre season draft to complete their new deals. But both the club and players must be pretty sure it is a formality otherwise their names would have been mentioned this week where they could at least get something for them or go where they wanted to.
