    agreed

I've just seen this posted by 'no-nothing" on the wild miscellany board.

"As a new user, can someone please explain to me why red and white online names its best player award after one who, shall we say, was a little limited as a player himself."

I gotta say I agree. I find it highly insulting this board gives recognition to Troy Luff, whatever his efforts, but no respect to someone like Paul Kelly through any such honour.

i'm-uninformed2 is such an apt name for yourself.

Luffy is actually a regular poster on this board and has assisted on several occasions for board get togethers.

I'd think you'd find it hard to think of a better club man (Kel included) than Troy Luff

Firstly, Troy is an occasional visitor to and poster on this board. He has supported us in a number of ways, including compering the trivia night Gemma organised a while back.

Secondly, I think it is fantastic to honour players like Luffy. No-one doubts PK's achievements and he already has a number of official trophies and awards named after him. Luff was a real cult hero with Swans fans and was a loyal servant to the club over a number of years, even during the times his efforts may not have been appreciated. And for a few years between 1996 and 1999 he played some excellent footy for Sydney. For me, celebrating and remembering the likes of Luffy is as important a part of following a football club as enjoying the exploits of the absolute topline players. And naming the board's award after him seems like an apt way of recognising his contribution.

It is also worth noting that the naming of the award after Troy was done with his "blessing" and I believe he contributed to the congratulatory messages presented to Willo last year.

Just by way of interest, how did Balmain go after he started coaching and playing for them? Surely not last.

Bart and Lizz summed it up pretty well. Luffy was (and still is) a great club man, and was a real fan favourite. Much like the TLM is a reflection of the fans' choice of player of the year. PK wouldn't be put out by it at all - if awards have to always be named after the greatest player, they'd ALL be the paul kelly medal, the paul kelly trophy etc - or the bob skilton trophy etc

Oh, and one more thing... i'm-uninformed2 and knownothing, you might actually be taken seriously if you stopped posting within minutes of each other FROM THE SAME IP ADDRESS. Just a hint.

177th Senior AFL Match - Round 4, 2009 - Sydney vs Carlton, SCG. This is obviously out of date. I suppose I'll update it once I could be bothered sitting down with the fixture and working it out....

Yes, we do work in the same office but look at some of our other posts - we disagree on occasions. Very detailed sleuth work there, Des.

I think you should change the name to the Leanne Edelstein Trophy in honour of the Swans rich history

Guys like Troy Luff who gave their commitment to the club over a long period of time deserve as much recognition as the very best players. He was never celebrated as one of the stars of the team, but without guys like him who knows where the club would be today. I am very happy to recognise talented guys like Luff who would do anything to play for their club. Give me a team full of these guys and I'll be happy, no matter whether we win or lose.

                  I've mentioned that before too.

I know Luffy was some sort of cult hero up North for a while, but I never really got it.

To me it belittles the award naming it after an average player.

"RWO Player of the Year" would be better IMO

I mean Goodsey, a Brownlow Medalist, would be beside himself with the 'Troy Luff Medal' trophy on his mantle I'm sure lol

Out of interest whats Troy Luff's user name? Has he been posting right under my nose.

IMO he was great I remember one day at the footy Chris Grant hit him right in the stomach right infront of me and Troy just got back up.

wow he registered on the 30th of january: my bday! what an honour...

Whilst you wouldnt class him as a superstar, he was always there giving it his best - cliche, i know - which is what I see alot of our current swannies as.
