    Plus
    Empty Spot from last year

    6 spots to fill

    Round 1
    Round 2

1 Spot on Pre Season draft?

    Rookie promotion?

    (38 Spots)
Seems James and Meiklejohn have been promoted.
Ricky Barham also said not long ago that Sydney would only use 3 picks in the pre-season draft. Makes you wonder why they traded Stevens for that other 3rd round pick....

Can't they re-draft Hunt with the extra pick? I'm not really sure why they do that, but they often seem to (perhaps because they are looking for something better and hedging their bets?).

We lost five, promoted two, that make three vacant spots. With one vacancy left from the last year, it makes four. So it seems we are going to draft four kids this year, not three.

We could always get the player in the pre-season that we want by retiring one of Warfe, Seymour or Nicks. On the record, I am quite surprise that none of them was delisted. I would have expected not three but at least one to go. The writing for Hunt has been on the wall since the time they selected James ahead of him when Saddo went down.

            What about McGlone?
This was his 2nd and final year he would be able to be on the rookie list......surely there's a spot for him on the senior list

i have a feeling that McGlone will still be here next year. There has been absolutely no talk about him coming or going with the news about Hunt, Amon, Heath and Meiklejohn. Perhaps everyone has missed something and he will stay on the rookie list.

The problem is, he can't stay on the rookie list.

I'm just hoping that this isn't the only round of delistings - that Warfe will be axed and McGlone will take his place. We haven't actually delisted McGlone yet, which I believe we need to do if he isn't on our list next year.

Actually, I just thought of something. Is it possible that the Swans are waiting to delist Warfe AFTER the contract turns over into 2004? I believe that happens today. Is there any financial reason why we may prefer to do this?

I think that if a player retires but still has time left on their contract, the payments are counted in the year they retire. That's why Richmond insisted a year ago that Daffy wait until November before he retired, or they would have been over the cap for 2002. If a player is delisted, however, I thought that the payments would be counted in the year they were originally intended for.

However, given the Swans were well under the cap in 2003 it's hard to see how this could have any relevance.

On the 4 vacancies. 2003 was to be a rebuilding year or lets say a stabilising year.

We have our fair share of older blokes and we have been good at picking up a quality player each year. There does not appear to be a quality player out there that we have a chance of picking up (maybe Motlop - but is he quality?), so I would be surprised if they don't continue to build from the bottom while we have the chance, by picking 4 in the draft and then axing one or two before the preseason draft, and pluck someone they think can play and not a dud.

Don't forget there may be someone overlooked in the first draft that they can then pick second time around.
